Hi does anyone know about living in a basement apartment in chicago?
Q. I am about to move into a 2 bedrooms basement apartment with my kids. They are still pretty young. The apartment is 2 steps below ground but the pipes on the ceiling are pretty scary. It seems they carry hot water. Can they leak or worst burst? Please let me know. I have not yet signed any lease.
A. The pipes won't spontaneously burst, just don't let your kids hang on them. Also, if one of them is a hot water pipe, it will be hot, don't touch it.
A more important concern about basement apartments is, means of egress (exits). A basement apartment needs to have a separate exit door leading directly to the outside, or escape windows big enough for a person to climb through, and low enough to the ground for a child to reach.
If it doesn't have that, it is considered a firetrap, and would not be a legal apartment.
