How can i plan a housework rota?
Q. I absolutely HATE housework and I don't want to do it but i've got 3 kids so i need to tidy up their toys, bits of paper, plus do the cleaning, washing up, etc. How do i find the time to do it all? How do i get motivated?
A. I do my floors and dust monday, wednesday and friday
bathroom gets a full clean on mondays then a touch up when I have my shower at night. tuesdays full clean for lounge kitchen and laundry. wednesday for the bedrooms. Thursday is shopping day and i wash when I have a full load for the washer fridays i give everthing a touch up ready for the weekend

Need help with painting my kids rooms?
Q. Currently the walls of my kids bedrooms are painted light blue and green. I need to change their bedroom cause they are bored of the same look for the past five years. I plan to put lemon yellow with grey. But I need info on how to remove the blue and green first. Please help as I plan to do the paint job myself.

Q. I mean living as upper middle class. No excessive spending and a good neighborhood for kids. a three bedroom apartment. a van or mid size car.
A. So you just moved here from another country. You don't have a car or home and you are now making payments. Here is what to expect for a family of four:
HOUSING
========
5 1/2 room apartment (3+ bedrooms)
- West Island $1000-1500 per month
- St. Michel, St. Leonard, Rosemont $700-1200 per month
Prices are much cheaper off the island of Montreal, but then you will add travel time and expenses to get to work.
Lower price areas are Verdun, St. Henri, Ville Emard, Point St. Charles, Ville St. Pierre, and parts of Lachine. Most expensive areas are Westmount, TMR, Cote Saint Luc, and NDG.
TRANSIT
=======
If you plan to live or work off island, you will need a car or minivan for a family of four. On island, you may want to take public transit to work, so a car is not a necessity unless you plan to do a lot of travelling.
Monthly bus/subway pass: $65 per month
Midsize new car purchase: $500+ per month car payment or lease
Gas costs today: $1.17 per litre
40L or more X 4 weeks = about $200 per month
(If you work downtown and bring a car, be prepared to pay for a parking permit of over $100 per month)
You need basic car insurance $(500-1000 per year), driver's license ($100), and registration ($200).
GROCERIES
==========
Assuming a family of four eats a variety of home cooked meals (beef, chicken, fish, pork, pasta) and only eats out once a week:
$200-250 per week groceries
$40 per week for eating out
expect $1000-1200 for food per month.
UTILITIES
========
Hydro Electricity costs vary depending on how much you use. Check the website for rates, and perhaps you can compare to the consumption you have now. Houses in Montreal can be heated by hydro electricity, furnace oil, or natural gas. You will still need hydro for lighting, air conditioning, appliances, etc.
OTHER
======
There are also public school taxes, water taxes, schoolbooks for kids, clothing, perhaps school fees, etc.
As for good neighbourhood for the kids, the West Island communities are great for safety and community watch groups. The city streets tend to be less congested with cars and traffic than they are in places like St. Leonard, NDG, or Cote Des Neiges. There are also criminal elements that have entered the three places I just named, making them less desirable for families with young or teen children.
Also important to keep in mind that if your children received schooling in English in any other Canadian province, they are entitled to attend English schools in Quebec. However, if you are immigrating to Quebec and did not receive any English schooling here, the children will be forced to attend French schools. (Not sure if that applies also to private schools, in case you want them to have an English education). Starting kids who know nothing but English into a French language school can be quite a culture shock, and their grades will definitely be affected the first few years. Pre-school kids are less likely to be affected this way.
