Answer
well first of all I'm new to this so I'll just go with the flow first of all since its a bedroom your working with you might won't to do the floor if its hard wood or something cold in the winter you might want to get a through rug or area rug there are cheap or expensive it depends where you buy it at.
and then there's paint first you want to know the color there are different places that sell paint.and a cool idea is to work with stencils there are different places where you can get stencils and printings off the internet and even free idea.

you might want to try walmart.com and go to the (for the home)they have bedding/crafts/decor/kids & teen rooms/rugs and storage/organization even window coverings.
and sense your room is small and for a teen you might have a twin bed online at walmart.com they have the bed in a bag sets.
here's a pretty blue striped bed in a bag set.http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10597398

it has * 63'' x 86'' comforter
* Bed skirt with 14'' drop
* 20" x 26" sham
* Flat sheet: 66'' x 96''
* Fitted sheet: 39'' x 76''; fits mattress up to 14''D
* Standard pillowcase: 20'' x 30''

and its cheap it only 40.00 dollars but this is just an example they have all different designs I'm just saying bed in a bag sets are cheap

and if its a small enough room you can probable even check your local good will they sometimes have cheap wall borders...

and your local library might also help by giving you free older teen magazines or home and garden magazines with helpful ideas inside...

on about.com just type in teen bedroom design or how to design a teen bedroom or designing on a budget or just look up things online like discount wall borders or discount wall murals or look up teen bedroom themes now days its all about the color so look in some teen magazines and match they color to the wall even if its a color of a t-shirt or a picture of a pair of shoes it the color your looking for and once you find it try working with the color to make your own them if you have to. also try looking up websites with how tos.

What is a good dog for children and a small living space?

VERONICA S

We are moving to a house that is split into 3 units, and we are moving into the one with 3 bedrooms. There is an acre of land, but it's not fenced in. The neighbor below us has two chocolate/black labs. Was thinking about getting a boxer, but open to everyone's ideas and experience!
My children are 2 and a half years and 6 years old. They are boys, so an active dog is what we're looking for. But one that wouldn't mind relaxing every now and then. I had dogs growing up, but not since I've lived away from my parents. The same goes for my husband. In our past we've had american eskimo, collie, mixes(from shelters), so we've definitely been around dogs. We'd like a dog that wants to walk every day as well. The most important part for us is that the dog gets along well with our children.

Answer
the boxer is a GREAT family dog. boxers are VERY, VERY high energy dogs, but it sounds like that will fit very well with what you want. a boxer will go for a walk, play fetch with the kids, play frisbee, and be the funniest & goofiest dog you've ever been around. i think you can tell by now that I'm a big boxer fan. i have two and their personalities crack me up daily.

since you don't have a fenced yard, an electric fence would work well for a boxer. they are very intelligent, so the training process would be quick. electric fences are not cheap, but they are a lot less than an actual fence. if you don't get a fence, electric or otherwise, then you will have to spend significant time with them outside daily. if you can't do that, i would suggest not getting a boxer.

boxers love kids and will be loyal and protective of them. so, you don't have to worry at all about their temperament. if you are a dog lover, a boxer will win you over quickly. they are typically big cuddlers and really crave human interaction.

the main concern you should have is around your younger 2 1/2 yr old child. the boxer will not intentionally hurt your child, but boxers are a high energy dog & built like a mack truck. the boxer may knock over your younger child and hurt him/her by accident. if you supervise the dog when around your children and the boxer gets enough exercise, then you will be fine.

couple of things to know about boxers:

1. they are quite messy eaters and drinkers. the area around their feeding bowls will need some cleaning up after a couple of times a week

2. boxers are gassy. i don't mean they pass gas once a week or so. i mean that they do it pretty regularly and when its bad, whoah, it can knock you off a chair. one of my boxers likes to walk by you and share it with you, then leave. pretty funny the first couple of times, but it gets not so funny pretty quick. :)

3. if you neglect their exercise schedule for more than a few days, they can become demons. a bored boxer will do all the typical "bad dog" things. some chew, some will dig holes, some will whine incessantly, etc...

4. boxers are indoor dogs and do not do well when it is extremely hot or cold. they have short snouts and very short hair. their bodies do not regulate temperature as well as most dogs. depending where you live, you will need to limit their outdoor activity on the cold winter days and hot summer days. btw, their short snout is also the reason they are more gassy than most dogs, they swallow more air when they eat and it has to come out somewhere downstream.

i don't list these things because boxers are bad dogs. i will only own boxers for the rest of my life. i think they are the best dog breed. new boxer owners should be made aware though. also, they are one of the most intelligent breeds. in germany, the only two dog breeds in the police force are boxers and german shepards. oh, and they are also very clean dogs, require very little bathing and don't have as much of a "dog smell" as most other breeds. that along with their hilarious personality, loyalty, and intelligence makes them the best in my book.

Kids rooms with no closets?

Apey

We are moving into a small 3 bedroom house soon (my husband, myself, and my 2 kids.. I'm also expecting our 3rd baby).. The rooms that will be my kids rooms are very small with no closets.. I'm sure I can fit a small dresser in my daughters room, however, my 1 year old boy will be sharing a room with his soon to be baby brother.. I'm afraid that a dresser won't fit in that room with 2 cribs in it. I mean, a small dresser probably will but I know i'll need more room for the boys clothes (they have alot). Any ideas or suggestions for where I can keep my kids clothes with limited space?

Answer
You need to look for narrow armoires. Focus on getting the tallest ones that will fit in the space you have. You can hang two clothes bars in them, one near the top and one near the middle to hang double the number of clothes. Be sure to bolt the armoires to the wall so they can't be tipped over into the room (kids and earthquakes can pull down anything.)
If that doesn't work I've actually seen people string strong cable from one wall to the opposite wall close the wall between and using that to hang clothes on. Of course it's in plain sight but some people like that look.

What does your bedroom look like (looking for decorating ideas)?

Q. My bedroom is in the attic. It has wood floors, beams along the ceilings, 2 big old windows, and a small bathroom attached. I painted two walls a very light green. I was going for a vintage, whimsical look. I have a double wooden bed with pink bedding and I used an old tapestry to create a canopy. I have a nightstand, big vintage trunk, bookshelf, papasan chair, pink couch, round kids table, craft desk, record player/stereo, armiore with my tv, dvd/vcr player, and video games, small mini fridge, and storage cabinet. I have alot of my own artwork and collages on the walls, twinkle lights, fake ivy, fantasy paintings, and a collage wall of posters. My bathroom is a light pink and I have a painted sink, glass cabinet, and bathtub. Beside my bathroom and the stairs is a small awkward space which I made into a little walk-in closet with my wardrobe, clothing rack, and shoe rack. I used some pull curtains to make a door.

Answer
I live in military government housing so I'm limited on painting. I can paint but then I have to put it all back to the way it was when I moved in - I'm only here for 3 years so I don't want to bother.
Since I'm military I'm kind of minimalist when it comes to decorating and furniture. My bedroom has hardwood floors, 9 foot ceilings and is about 16X16 ft. I have a bed and 2 nightstands on the entry wall and a chest of drawers and a dresser on the wall opposite. On the wall opposite the windows I have a wall type closet and 2 canvas wardrobes that take up the entire wall. I don't have a frame on my bed so the boxspring just sits on the floor. I hung a green and blue dining table runner in place of a headboard and hung black and white beach pictures directly on the runner. On the window wall on either side of the window I have shadow box picture frames with pictures I took in Hawaii, green landscapes, and a few pics of the ocean from the air when I went up in a glider. I have green and blue sheers on my window - they are layered on 2 different rods. On the wall with the chest and dressers I have hung 2 scarves that match the curtains but have gold detailing that I bought when I was in Afghanistan. I also have a pair of dark wood shelves with books and vases that I also bought in Afghanistan. My bedding is blue and green to match the curtains and the scarves. I also have a blue and gold rug on the floor that I also bought in Afghanistan. I was going for relaxing tropical resort kind of feel. On the dresser I have a carved wooden palm tree that I got in Mexico and light blue and green candle holders. None of the colors are dark but do vary in shade with the darkest being the table runner headboard with dark blue and grass green and the rest being more of a sky blue with a soft lime green.

Making a playroom-ideas?

Q. I have 3 kids, 0-4.
I have a 2 story house, upstairs are our bedrooms. There are 3 rooms, and livingroom.
Downstairs, another livingroom, and two bedrooms. (And, the laundry room)

The 2 rooms downstairs are literally across from eachother. One has a door. (I'm debating on taking the doors out)

What I am wanting to do is make these areas playrooms. Now, the downstairs has been "abused" Actually this whole house has been neglected, but my husband and I are slowly getting the upstairs to look nice.
I want some Free-Cheap things I can do to this room. To make it a PLAY room.
We have a bookshelf, but it's upstairs in our livingroom setting perfectly with our other bookshelf, so I'd rather not move it. :) It looks nice!

I have a big, bulky computer desk that is not used.
We have some other things, I'm sure I could find to use...

Anywho, we have quite a few toys, and I'm actually wondering-What toys should I bring down there? I don't want toys they use ALL the time, because I don't want them down there without me. But I want toys they like. Any suggestions on fun toys for the play rooms?

Right now these rooms have stuff in them- we had a roommate who recently moved out, and he left TRASH. It's not easy to lift trash either.

The rooms really need to be remodeled, etc... but I can't afford to do that yet.. But I would like to comfortably wash clothes!!
Anyhow, I am looking for ANY suggestions that would make this easier/more fun.

Like I said, I'm limited on money, and all, but I would still like to get started. And, if there are any suggestions about getting toys/ organizing. What toys would be most beneficial for a playroom. Etc.

Also, where do you get those rugs that have the little towns on them-for cars? How much do they run?
I'm not worried about painting right now.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

Answer
The puzzle piece play mats are great for play rooms and even toddler bedrooms..we have them in both. Totes can serve as toy bins if you have any lying around and they are usually cheaper and hold more than toy organizers anyway. Label each bin with a piece of constuction paper, or some other type of paper, and have the kids decorate and color them. This way, all the toys will have a bin and they won't have to drag everything out to find certain things..they can also practice putting away toys is designated areas this way. Drawings, painting, etc that the kids do can be used as wall art. You might find a nice kids table at a local garage sale or something to put in the room. That way the kids could do crafts, color, paint, etc on it. Walmart has some kids table and chair sets at decent prices, but i'm not sure how much you really have to spend, so looking at garage sales, etc is you best bet to start off with. If your looking to add a nice coat of paint to the walls, pick a nice bright color or you could pick a neutral color, then you could have the kids dip their hands in a different color paint and put their hand prints on the wall...its a cheap idea and looks great for play rooms, but its only a suggestion. I suggest putting larger toys in the play rooms because they take up so much space in a bedroom, which is what we do. Beanbag chairs or small chairs are also nice for play rooms. The rugs with cars can be purchased at toys r us, or at least, that is where we bought our nephews..for like 15$ and that was for a medium size one..hope this helps.

Cleaning schedule for pregnant mom with 2 kids?

ashley

house is alway a wreck need a weekly cleaning schedule but i have two toddlers and am pregnant. we have a two bed house with dining living laundry bath room and a mud room( enclosed front porch catch all). thanks

Answer
"My house is always a wreck. I need a weekly cleaning schedule since I have two toddlers and also I am pregnant. We have a two bedroom house with dinning, living, laundry, one bathroom and a mud room. Thanks." Now that is how you should have written your posting. You elected just kind of invent your own language rules and in "no rules." Speaks poorly for your knowledge and discipline much like your house speaks poorly for domestic responsibility and you having two toddlers plus being pregnant speaks volumes as to reproductive responsibility. YOU decided to get pregnant three times. And I would bet money that this house has been a wreck before the first child was even born. You see, I know people that are just like you. And the issue is not a lack of schedule. It is psychological and deeply rooted in your psyche. I am limited in space on this forum so I need to be brief. First, an experiment. Go to the kitchen and set a timer for two minutes. Start it. During those two minutes you shall wash, dry, stack, put away any plates, cutlery, pots and pans that have been placed all over the place. Once the timer stops, you stop. Measure what you did as in how much you got done. It shall amaze you. Now, set the timer again to one minute. Start it. During these 60 seconds you shall arrange what is left in some order as to wash them. If you say "But I have a dishwasher!" OK, I understand that. My point is that the dishwasher never gets loaded or never gets emptied. If it does, please measure the time in loading it as many people wash the dishes BEFORE placing the dishes in the dishwasher!! What? Yep. They do. This takes longer and it is more cumbersome and expensive. That is it. As for cooking, follow this pattern. Morning. Family eats. Dishes come out of the cabinets. They get used. They get cleaned and place back into the cabinets. No excuses. You can do this in two minutes. I do this myself. Next, living room. Nothing lives there. Clothes, shoes, toys, etc. Nothing. Kids play with toys? Fine. They get picked up. Same with the bathroom. Two minutes. Done. For people like you, a schedule does not work. Why? No discipline for if you had discipline you would not need a schedule. About children. STOP HAVING THEM! Get a tubal ligation or some form of practical birth control. You have no ideas how much money and time you shall spend in ten more years. NO IDEA. STOP. Please! It is not your job to create over 50 more people on the planet. OK? I know of a family that had five kids. These five had four to five themselves. From two came five. From those seven came 28. Add these up and it goes exponentially. OK? Stop. Please. You have a husband or partner? Guess what? He cleans, he washes the tub, the children, the room, his shoes, etc. ALL MUST PARTICIPATE. Use the two minute drill. But somehow, I get this feeling since I have seen this before, this never gets done. Psychology interferes. People tend not to do what they think is work, or too hard. Well, the health of the children depends on cleanliness. That includes the refrigerator and the bathroom and their bedrooms. Since I believe that people express their personalities via their writing and you clearly showed total lack of discipline in that area, I can only challenge you and have hope. But reality, based on past experiences is that you most likely will find it too difficult to change. Sorry. Reality is real. I hope that you follow my advice. Having children and a home is work. It can enjoy or dreaded. I enjoy my home and work to keep it clean, tidy and healthy. And I do. Just before I came to the computer I did the two minute drill post lunch. I shall pray for you and your family.

how can i stop garage being cold in winter?

kids bedroom ideas with limited space
on ... of various collections of master bedroom master bedroom design gallery
kids bedroom ideas with limited space image

Gary s

i use my garage as a playroom for the kids but in the winter it is too cold for them. I was wondering the best way to insulate the 7 foot metal garage door during winter months. There is also a bedroom above garage which is cold. I live in rented accomadation so limited to alterations. I though of buying a large piece of carpet to to cover door. Any ideas please?

Answer
The carpet is a bad idea. Rather, get some rigid foam panels and cut them to fit onto the garage door. If you can get the sort with aluminum foil on one side, the foil goes toward the inside (living space). It will also keep the bedroom upstairs warmer.

One other possibility is to heat the garage. I have a heated garage - detached from the house. It has a gas line in it and I put a heater in. Exhaust duct through the wall - but then again, I own, not rent. So whenever I have to work on a car I have a heated space to do it.

My kids are all grown up and most are living elsewhere. My baby girl (25) is back home and going to college (YEAY!) So we don't need the garage heated for play time. Only when I'm playing with the cars.

Hope this helps.

Bachelor pad decorating help?

dan

I'm buying a house in a month. I am a bachelor and will live there alone, at least at first. It's a 3 bedroom rancher with 1 bathroom, a nice size living room, and a big kitchen. The living room and kitchen have brand new vinyl flooring. I'm going to repaint some rooms (kids lived there) and then recarpet the bedrooms.

I have a good idea what I'm going to do with the space in terms of furniture, but my main question however is, I need a little help with decorating. What kinds of things (pictures, posters, etc) should I hang on the wall?
by the way I'm 25 if that helps.

Answer
If you are 'decorating' a place for the guys to hang out and drink beer -- the posters, etc. that others have mentioned are appropriate.

However, if you hope to look like an educated, financially stable professional ---

1) furniture should match, and be 'real' furniture. (No directors chairs, beanbags, college-dorm furniture) If something was repaired with duct-tape, throw it out.

2) choose a single piece of art for over the sofa or fireplace -- the dominant colors in that piece should determine colors for other pieces. By art, I mean a painting or framed print. Posters do NOT count as art, except possibly if they are framed and under glass.

3) limit the trophys (bowling, stuffed wildlife, etc.) to a minimum.

4) put things 'away' -- the fewer things 'out', the fewer things that get dusty and look cluttered.

In all the rooms, limit the number of things that are out on counters, tabletops, etc.

Also -- a clean kitchen and bathroom go a LONG way in impressing dates.

Have you thought about changing from a full size bed to a futon. When it comes to storage space, you have lots of options. I suggest getting a few house and home magazines and looking through them for ideas.

Hello everyone. I have a little dilema with the question of 2 bedrooms vs. 3.?

stace22

Without any renovations our 2 bedroom's features blow away any other 2 bedroom in the surrounding area (will be 2.5 bath since there originally wasn't one on the 1st floor, 2 fireplaces, breakfast nook, screened in porch and part. finished basement etc.) but the house isn't big enough to put another bedroom on the 1st/2nd floor. Our other option is to put one in the basement that we are going to finish but we hear those don't sell well plus there are certain codes we have to follow. The area is nice, but isn't booming with resale $ so we don't want to overspend on renovations. However, we also don't want to limit what we could get because its nicer than most 3 bedrooms in the area but only has 2. im thinking possibly doing a "study that can be used as a 3rd bedroom" to not have to stick to code but give people the idea they COULD have a 3rd bedroom if they needed it. This sound good or should i go with the actual 3rd bedroom? Or should I just save the money and leave it as 2.

Answer
Maybe what you might want to take into account also is the KIND of people who live in your area generally. Are there a lot of DINKs? (Dual income, no kids..) They typically need less space so a 2 bedroom would be plenty for them probably if they're nice. Is it mostly younger families? If so, then you probably want to see how much making a 3rd bedroom would cost (including adding an extra door if necessary to meet the fire code) because a young family will be more likely to have young kids and want at least a 3 bedroom house.

With the 3rd bedroom, many communities will have fire codes about the egress you have to have (for obvious safety reasons). We have a walk-out basement so we get a pass but if the only way out is up the basement stairs you'd probably have to add a door to comply with the local fire code.

I think you'd be better off with the study since you say the area "isn't booming with resale $$". If you make a 3rd bedroom and it isn't something you'll use, then you're spending a lot of money on a bet that someone else will want it one day. I tend to believe you should make the house the way YOU want it...unless you plan on putting it on the market soon.

what is a good color for decorating a paris themed room besides pink or white ?

kids bedroom ideas with limited space image

Q. i am redoing my room in a parisian theme and need some ideas on how to make it look and feel like your in Paris ,France .I am a 17 yr old girl so please no little kid ideas or anything pink thank you

Answer
Paris is a vibrantly colorful city with every hue imaginable, so you should select the one that will help you to create the vibe you're trying to achieve in your room. If you're wanting a serene, sophisticated haven you could paint your room a soft lavender gray and have a gallery wall of framed sepia prints of some of Paris's most beautiful architecture. If you want a lively space you could paint your room a vivacious green, sky blue, or pretty turquoise and put up pictures of Luxembourg Gardens and other gems of Paris in the spring. A very soft aqua is feminine without being girlish. I attended the Maison & Objet interior design exposition in Paris last year, and kelly green was the trendiest color then. Of course, this year a new color will be in vogue. Choose what you love.

There's so much more to Paris than the Eiffel Tower or the Moulin Rouge, so you shouldn't limit yourself. Consider the colors you love the most, and how they make you feel. Reds and oranges tend to be more energetic and passionate, but they can be a bit much in a bedroom where you want to be able to relax and sleep. Medium toned blues and greens are usually more tranquil. Pastels are fresh and youthful. There's a fun coffee book titled "Paris in Color" and you can see some of the photos from it here: http://www.missmoss.co.za/2012/04/23/paris-in-colour/

Have fun decorating!

how can i stop garage being cold in winter?

kids bedroom ideas with limited space
on Home-Dzine - How to maximise on a shared bedroom for children
kids bedroom ideas with limited space image

Gary s

i use my garage as a playroom for the kids but in the winter it is too cold for them.

What kind of dog should she get?

Willalee

We have a 6 yo boy who would like to get a dog. Granted, I understand that it will be MORE of my responsibility, and I am ok with this.... but previously I have only had large dogs. The place we are in is a 2 bedroom condo, we already have 2 cats. There is not a lot of room for the dog to run, but the place is pretty big and we would plan on taking the dog out with us a lot.

So, I guess we are looking for a small - med dog - under 30 lbs that would be good with kids and other pets. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer
6 years old huh? Then this could be a passing whim. I BEGGED FOR YEARS and that is not the criteria, but it sure makes you appreciate alot more what you want when get you it. I had to wait until I was 13 and I don't think that was a bad age. It would not even hurt to test your son's determination or maybe I should say idea about this. Maybe some number of days and tasks before he can get a dog. I was bent for years on having one and determined to take sole care. Common, how much trouble can feeding twice a day and watering and walking be? I am here to tell you now that I was shocked how big of a pain in the pandora or whatever it was, it was for me when I was young. Most of the time, you are right-mom had to do it all. Ofcourse it was not like that the first few days or week or two but I sorely -and regretfully remember how much it interfered with my plans after that. I also remember about every day we had with the guy. He died of cancer when I was 27 years old. Most importantly tho, I remember all the dogs that neighborhood kids had that got outside or loose and hit by cars. Some died soon, some lingered and it was horrible. Honestly, i think 6 is too young, not just to be walking and caring for a dog but to able to keep it inside when it has to be and to watch doors so it doesn't get out but if you are bent to do this now, I also remember how many of the neighbor dogs I liked and what it felt like when I asked where is Peggy or Ginger only to learn they were sold to strangers or taken to the shelter because there was not time or space enough for them. Animals have feelings and are loyal, please be TOTALLY committed to the responsibility of one if you get one. I guess that brings me to another point which is that so far over 90% and close to all of the pets that are taken to shelters are killed. They call it euthenation. If you get a dog now or later, please save one from death row. By which you know i mean go to the shelter or humane society and I have a suggestion about that...people don't seem to want dogs after they are over a year old. After a year most are done chewing and ruining things, and they are done darting out when they are older or being wild like young dogs are. I thinik adopting a more mature dog is a much better idea. Ussually they are trained and housebroken not to mention that you can find out which ones were raised and get along well with cats because no matter what the breed is-it is personality too and not all dogs will accept cats. By the same token, not all cats will accept a dog but a cat is much more likely to if the dog is agreeable to them and not chasing them around the house or growling at them.

The breed is a more difficult question. Sometimes smaller dogs are quicker to bite out of fear and a stronger need to be in control. I guess the best house dogs for children are mostly know to be collies (so a miniture collie-called a boarder collie perhaps), or a medium sized cockerspaniel maybe. Another decent choide would be a schnauzer. They are one of the most intelligent and there is alot to be said for know when do something and when not to. They are very loving and not overly small...nor overly large. Remember that most cities have a limit of 2 or 3 pets per household so that no one comes and takes your beloved animal away. Vaccinations are a legal necessity and that they be kept up to date, for the pet's sake and the sake of people. Then last of all, make sure your landlord says it is ok first. Remember too it is difficult to find places that allow pets so keep in mind how permanent your stay will be where you are. And if you do this, I would by all means check the dogs out first on the net-most shelters advertize there with photos. Get an idea what is where and when you see appropriate choices it would be really nice to take your son and let him make the final decision. talk to other pet owners first and get a feel of what you want and what you are in store for.Remember that this actually is a big step so think it through well and best of luck. I love cats and dogs and am committed.
