How do I decorate a toddler's bedroom without breaking the bank?

Little Bug

I need to turn my son's plain nursury into a toddler boys room, but I;m not sure what to do.

Paint isnt cheap ( I dont care what you say, an 11X12 bedroom will cost us $100 to paint), and we have a crib that converts to a toddler bed, only problem is that they no longer sell the guard rail that converts it to a toddler bed (It's target's do your room nursury crib). A friend gave us an elecric blue and yellow plastic/metal bed, (no stickers, it was spongebob I think) but I can't find any toddler rooms that seem to not look cheap/cheesey with the plastic/metal beds, or rooms that are not girly with the crib to daybed option. Plus I can't find a guard. The twin bed guards don't work with toddler mattresses

Am I going to have to shell out $50+ for a wooden toddler bed, plus table+chair set ($50), toy organizer ($59), Posters ($9.99+Frames), Bedding ($40)?

..

Thats $224!!!!!!..at least!!

Anyone know if building the stuff is cheaper? Is it easy? I don't have a lot of tools (nor do I live by an Ikea), so buying plans won't help me very much.

ANy ideas?

I've tried Craigslist, consignment stores, 'goodwill stores', and none of them have any of the stuff I'm looking for. Not even a plastic table or toybox, or they have it and it's used...abused.. and $10 less then the new stuff

I'm burnt out and wondering how to do this for him without shelling out $300 in cash

Answer
Hey i have a toddler myself, and i know what you mean!
You want to make it more grown up and colourful but not not spend alot of money!

If your in australia, you can go to spotlight, they have packs of kids furniture, such as say a toddler bad and some cupboards.Or just the beds, in characters, and they are reasonably cheap! It will last him till he is big enough for a single bed! Also they sell like tables and chairs!
But if you do not wish to go out and buy this new, id say just go to target or a store thats similiar and just buy a clip on rail. I think they are like $30. (or ebay)

Go to your local baby stores, and check out thier sales on decor for rooms. For my daughter i just picked up a pack (think there was 6-7) wooden decorations that you just stick on the wall. They are like princess theme, so castles and so on, they arent big maybe like 10cm x 10cm... and i think that was like $20. I dont know where your located (please tell me =]) cause i got these at baby kingdom! (Im in australia)
But alot of baby stores have sale bins on decor for rooms. You can usually find alot of nice things cheap!

Or if you really dont have time or money to search. You can just get old wrapping paper (that is in good condition) with nice prints for boys such as cars and so on (if you have non just go to a dicsount store and buy a sheet for $1!) and frame these. I have in my daiughters room, in a frame, the first wrapping paper she ever got from a gift when she was born. Its soo cute and is sentamental aswell! You can do this aswell with gift bags you have laying around!

Or you could simply get your son to draw pictures of his favourite things on bright coloured paper and frame this! And when he has friends or family over he can show it off!! Lets him contribute!

Hmm think thats all i can think of at the time sorry lol, we did so many things like this, not just to save money, but so its unique and different!

hope its helped!
goodluck!!
I will add any more ideas i come up with! =]

Anyone moved to Glasgow from another country? What were your experiences?

Psyche

I'm trying to get some personal responses on your experiences. I'm from Australia and would like to live there. Any ideas, suggestions, stories? :) Thanks.

hello
i dont know if i could help but what i can give you is alot of personal experiance as i live in glasgow and have all my life.

glasgow is a very rainy city and moving from australia you would find it hard to adjust to the dull weather. you never know what its gonna b like, one minute its warm and sunny and 10 mins later its freezing and pouring.
winters are long and summers are ok but sometimes very short.

it is quite expensive so it is advised that you have a good job and savings to get by over here. i live in 2 bedroom flat with my husband and daughter which costs me 550 pounds per month! this is the average price for a cheap good quality 2 bedroom.
if you would like to look at flats you can go on the following websites...

www.s1rental.com
www.gilpro.com
www.lettingweb.com

the best area to live in is probably the west end although the southside is similar and cheaper. these are areas such as shawlands.

the food is good although most people i know tend to gain weight quickly when they move over here as they get carried away with the traditional fish and chips, pizza etc...haha
there are alot of local grocers and supermarkets though and you will never be far away from local 24 hour newsagents which sell pretty much everything!

people are very friendly.very welcoming and like to party, enjoy themselves and socialise so finding friends wont be difficult!

if you have kids there are many nurseries around. private nurseries are quite expensive and state nurseries are good depending on which one you choose. those are free. the same goes for public schools.

there are quite a few activities you can do....
lots of leisure centres, cinemas, good restaurants, bars and clubs, lots of hillwalking and adventure parks you can have all sorts of activities in, many local parks(clean and quiet), toddler/mother grops, summer activities for children which are cheap, a few festivals in the summer and so on...

there are also many colleges uni's and jobs available all the time.
there are many ways to get around if you dont have a car.
buses, trains, undergrounds, taxi's which are all pretty cheap.

if there is anything else you would like to ask my email is laurtay1989@yahoo.com.
feel free to ask about anything at all!!

good luck
