A. I came to Toronto from the west three years ago, so with the limited info I've got, here goes:

- Toronto's not as scary and unsafe as you think; it's a city of neighbourhoods, like 15 different neighbourhoods all squished into one. Some are scary, some are really suburban and nice, some are hip and pricey, etc.

- Best options I think would be:
Living "on the Danforth", referring to Danforth Avenue, which is the easterly extension of Bloor St. It's populated mostly by young couples with children, Greek restaurants and fruit shops and is generally a fairly safe place to be. Some of the best schools in the Toronto District School Board are around the neighbourhood just south of the Danforth. There are lots of parks, not a lot of congestion, and the home ownership rate is high. The trouble is, the further from the main streets you get, the harder it is to get to transit. (Generally speaking, NOTHING is next to both the highway AND public transit, since transit is runs along the downtown core and the highway is a big circle around the downtown, but you'll find quickly that you really don't need a car to live in Toronto.)

- High Park (or "Bloor West") is also a friendly area -- a little more moneyed, a little more residential -- with very good schools. It's a little more populated by families in their late 40s. Ditto for "Eglinton" or "Davisville".

- If you can afford it, "Rosedale", "Forest Hill" and "Bridle Path" are the wealthiest neighbourhoods with the best private schools.

-A step below that, you might want to consider "Riverdale" -- the more residential, idyllic community just north of the Danforth. Do not confuse this with "Parkdale": a gorgeous neighbourhood filled with beachfront mansions that has since gone to the crackheads (but is now on the mend).

- DO NOT be convinced by any advertisements for rental spaces along Parliament or Sherbourne (or Ontario Street, or anything in that vicinity). It's an area called St. James Town, and it'll give you a pretty depressing impression of Toronto. Ditto for anything in the Jane and Finch area.

Use the sources below to get the skinny on any apartments you're looking into. The first one is good for getting the 'flavour' of an area; the second is good for cold, hard facts about things like school performance, property crime, and ethnic diversity.

Best of luck, and welcome to Toronto!
