How can we get our new cat to socialize?

Q. ok, basically, our problem is this, we have four cats. One momma cat and three kittens. about five days ago my wife opened the door and right there on the porch, there's a half starved five month old kitten who just walks right up to her.

We expected the usual two or three days of problems with the other cats, but we're still having troubles. Diva and her kittens keep themselves to the kitchen and our room, while Stranger stays around the living room and the kids bedroom and refuses to go into the other end of the house at all. The kittens come around every now and again, but she just hisses at them and they retreat to their end of the house. They just refuse to realise that they're all in one house together and that's how it's going to be.

A. You're obviously cat-smart people and have had lots of experience with them. Even when we know them well, their behaviours can still surprise and dismay us.
Your cats are acting as they would in the wild, not as house-trained pets. A five month old kitten is right next door to sexual maturity, no matter how starved and small it is. Diva and her kittens are really afraid of the new cat because cats (especially males) will kill kittens in the wild. And your Stranger is afraid of and hostile to any other kittens - afraid the the mother will kill him and hostile to any competition for food. I recommend not allowing the newcomer to get close to the kittens for at least a week. If possible keep it in one room for a couple of days until it calms down. Pet the other kittens right before you feed the newcomer, which will transfer the smell of the other kittens to its dish. It will begin to associate their smells with food. Do the same thing to Diva and her kittens - touch the newcomer and transfer its smell to their dishes. Once everyone is used to each other's smells you'll have a more relaxed group. And by the way, it was so kind of you to take in the new little cat. Hope it works out for all of you.

How much would it cost to add on two rooms to my house?
Q. I live in Oklahoma (not sure if that matters) and my parents are thinking of adding two bedrooms to their house. One to use as a guest bedroom and the other for an office. Both the size of descent kids bedrooms, nothing huge. My dad and husband are going to be doing most of the work and labor. Anyone one know an estimate of how much the total cost for materials would be?

A. A typical construction with the most basic of interior finishes, start at around $80 per square foot and easily rise to $200 per square foot with custom cherry cabinets, hardwood floors, Mahogany baseboard & trim and cedar door & window , wool carpet, imported tiles, spa bath, custom showers, etc.

Other factors to contribute to any cost would be the ease of access to the site with more difficult sites easily rising by 10%-15% and the availability of labor, number of windows, roof type & covering, single storey or double (if you have a double storey house and put the bedroom on top of each other it cheaper than 2 bedrooms at ground level because less roof to build & cover, less footing to dig & pour concrete and so on)

Well, you get the idea, unless you have a specific idea of quality of materials/interior finishes and detail of site layout, location and availability of labor any answer would be a guess.

I’m guessing around $70 sq ft to put 2 bedrooms at ground level with no plumbing, if you’re going to need an on suite that would bump that up to around $90 sq ft if not more.

Can pumping cold air from the basement to a bedroom cool it down?
Q. Our basement is very cold while it is hot outside. I have duct fans on solar panels pushing air upstairs to the kids bedrooms through duct lines. Cold air is coming from the vents upstairs feeling like air conditioning, is this worth investing in or is it a waist of time? The temperature seems to be a bit cooler than before but not much. I'm trying to find ways to cut back on energy.

A. I would think it would work. the energy from the warm air will flow to the cool air, making the air in the room cooler than before the cool air come.
