Where's the best place in the Denver area for a young family to live?

Q. I'm in my early twenties and looking to move to the Denver area. I want to go somewhere with a great school system that's close enough to the metro area for me to commute. I'd say 30 miles or less. It would be great to find a place that's close to the mountains! Yea! It needs to be a safe and friendly place for my wife and kids to walk to the store and stuff. A hockey rink close by would be nice. I'd be looking for a decent house in a nice neighborhood with a yard and 3-4 bedrooms in the price range of $150 to $250k.

A. I live in Historic Montclair and for raising kids and having the appearance of suburbia, but within distance of everything I love about urban Denver, it is a great location.
If you prefer shiney and new - Lowry is directly across the street with all your standard strip mall chains (ie Starbucks, Qdoba, Albertsons, etc) but there are some local small business owners mixed in (Urban Harvest, Chewy's Bonetique, Studio Bini and Timbuk Toys).
Just North is Park Hill which is just a brilliant blend of historic Denver, and just South is Crestmoor/ Hilltop for a more highend (yet elderly) lifestyle.
But I have to say, my favorite neighborhood in Denver is the area between Speer and Colorado bordered by 6th Ave - this encompasses a few different neighborhoods but the housing is mixed, the people are cool, and I love all the new restaurants on 6th Ave. This area is quickly becoming one of my favorites for "value within walking distance". The commute downtown, DTC or anywhere else hip and fun is also just a 5-10 minute car ride.

Good luck!

Has anyone been to Give Kids The World at Disney World?
Q. We are going in January 2009 and would like to know everything we need to know before going. Thank you!

A. We have been there just this last year from Jan 2-8th of 09. We had a blast. Whatch wanna know?

We stayed at villa 113. They have free ice cream, for everyone from 8am-9pm. Free "homemade" pizza from 4:30pm-midnight.

The childrens bedrooms have a huge hot tub in them. Theres 3 pools, 1 was under construction while we were there though. The pools arnt deep, they only go to 4 feet.

The kids get freebrand new toys, & dvds everyday (my son left there with 30 dvds).

They give the kids a star totake to the castle, & they put it up on the celiing for them. They get a pillow to take home from the bobble machine.

They even let you borrow a dvd camcorder to film your trip, & they in turn will put it on a dvd for you to watch.

They have horseback rides on mini ponies, Disney & Nicloldeon characters come to visit (Make sure to take a autograph book for the children)

The meals are free from the gingerbread house. Breakfast, lunch, & dinner that is.

They even have a huge elm tree named elmer, that has a huge face in it, & snores.

The trash cans talk to you. Train rides around the village, a little golf course, and a billard room type place that has a pool table, some games, air hockey, & a piano.

I hope this helps you out. Have a ton of fun, & make new memmories too, take lots of pics, we did & are very happy we did too.

My neighbor has those annoying solar lights. Would spraying sunscreen on them stop them from working?
Q. He has a lot of them. I would guess one every 6 inches along his driveway. I'd guess he has about 150 of them total. Very, very annoying.

A. No, not only would that not work it would be illegal.

If it is as bad as you say and it interferes with your sleep etc. you can file petition in most courts for "annoyance" and ask that he tone it down. Since they work until the sun charge runs out, I can see how so many would get on anyone's nerves night after night.

Have you asked him to tone it down nicely? (Sometimes, not often, people are rationale.)

I feel you pain: our neighbors build skating rink out back every winter that it is cold enough and had a humongous spotlight. It was on when kids were playing hockey, but also turned on when any animal ran around and stayed on just long enough to wake us up: even with black out shade.

We asked them to get a lower powered light or to cut off the motion detector and they did. Turns out they had no idea (their bedroom windows weren't impacted, but one of their kids was and he agreed!) how obnoxious it was.

He probably thinks it looks nice. If he isn't willing to cooperate nicely, just file an annoyance complaint with cop or local courthouse (call you city/town hall: many towns have bylaws on this).
Just don't do something like say, pouring bleach on the lights, which is would likely destroy the solar panels because then he can press vandalism charges against you and in most states the laws haven't been adjusted for inflation and as little as $250 in damages is a felony.

Good luck.

At what age do you think it's okay to install a TV in a child's bedroom?
Q. My husband and I are pushing for 16...our 7 year old wants her own TV yesterday. Just wondering what other people think about the old TV in the bedroom debate?
Just to let you all know we both come from big families and had all of 1 (yes 1) TV in the entire house growing up...neither of us had tv in our rooms. I never died from not having one. Just wondering what the rest of the planet thinks today.

A. I can tell you what the rest of the planet thinks. If the kids want, we should provide. We're not good parents if we don't pony.
That is bull hockey.

YOU KNOW THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR OWN QUESTION or your kid would already have the TV, DVD player, computer and at least one game system in his/her room already.

Do the right thing and limit the mind numbing activities to time shared as a family. Watch a little TV or play a couple of video games together a few nights a week. When it's time to stop, turn off the noise and help your kid(s) tune into something worthwhile like reading, sports, or just chatting.
No child or married couple needs a bedroom TV.
