Can you tell me some ways to organize a kid's room in a pretty way?

Q. Can you tell me some ways to organize a kid's room in a pretty way?

A. Creating a jungle theme kids bedroom is an opportunity to use really fun colors and prints. Consider painting the room a fresh green or a bright yellow to provide a warm and exotic backdrop for the rest of the room's elements.

Instead of typical window treatments, think about getting some silk vines and foliage from the craft store and draping them around the windows as you would with a scarf curtain. Then perch stuffed parrots or monkeys nearby to round out the jungle canopy effect.

You can use jungle themed bedding, or simply use bright solids and stripes, and accent the room with throw pillows in animal-print fabrics. There are several sources for wall stickers in a jungle theme to add even more visual interest.

Fairy Tale Princess Themes

Many elements of décor for little girls' rooms lend themselves to dreaming of once upon a time and far, far away. From canopy beds to eyelet and lace and pale pink, you may already have many of the elements in place to make your daughter's room a real Princess's room. To bring the fantasy one or two step closer to reality, rely on some paint techniques and a few choice accessories.

Paint the ceiling a sky blue and sponge paint on some clouds; turn the walls of your girl's room into castle walls with faux painting techniques, and embellish them with stenciled runners of ivy you can even add some silk ivy from the craft store for additional dimension. Swath tulle or silk flowers where you'd otherwise put a valance and curtains, and be sure to add a stuffed frog prince someplace in the room just for a bit of whimsy!

How do I hook up two analog phones together as a toy for my child?
Q. I want to use two of our old telephones as a toy for our daughter and her friends. I want one of the phones to be in her playroom and one to be in her bedroom. This way she and her friends can be in different rooms and have a "real" phone conversation. My father did this for me when I was a child but I cannot remember how he did it. I only remember that he used "D cell" batteries. Does anyone know how to accomplish this and can give detailed directions on how to put the system together? Thanks.

A. This is pretty simple.

You need a stack of at eight D batteries connected in series - we are connecting the phones in series, so each phone will see six volts this way.

You can buy battery holders at Radio Shack that are all set up to connect the cells in series - this means each cell's positive terminal (the tip on the top) goes to the next cell's negative terminal (the flat bottom). This will give you a total of 12 volts.

If there are cords coming out of the phones, they probably include red and green wires - these are your connection points. If the phones have modular jacks, get a modular jack to baseboard adapter - this will have four screw terminals, red, green, black, and yellow. Again you need the red and green points.

If it's an old phone with no wire hanging out and no modular jack, take the cover off and look for a block with a whole bunch of screw terminals on top. This is the "425-B network." Two of the terminals are labeled L1 and L2. These are your connection points. I believe L1 is red and L2 is green, but I couldn't swear to it - anyway it won't matter.

The connections go like this:

From phone 1's red wire to the negative terminal of the battery pack

from the positive terminal of the battery pack to phone 2's green wire

from phone 2's red wire to phone 1's green wire

and that's it.

Yes, that's really all there is.

Except that i may have the polarities reversed; it's been a while - but this matters little (keep reading).

Of course dialing won't work, and the phones won't ring (that takes about 90 volts AC at about 20 Hz), and there will be no dial tone - all that stuff is provided by the central office. Your kids will just have to know to pick up the two phones.

If they're touch tone phones and you want the tones to work, first, the tones will not work unless both phones are off-hook. take both phones off hook and try some buttons on one phone- if the tones don't work, then just reverse its wires (red for green). Do the same test at the other phone. In fact, test both at the same time - if they both don't work, just reverse the connections to the battery.

Conversely if you don't care about the tones, then polarity doesn't matter. In that case polarity doesn't matter; it's just

either wire of phone 1 to one end of the battery pack
the other end of the battery pack to either wire of phone 2
the other wire of phone 2 to the other wire of phone 1

Have fun!

How can I keep my wedding dress clean?
Q. My wedding is a year from now, I'm planning on making my own wedding dress (Totally cool right?) and I'm worried about it getting dirty, white turning yellow, stuff like that. Its gonna be a simple dress, but I have three cats and a dog I REALLY don't want them finding away to snuggle on top of it.
Should I just put it in like a plastic bag? Or what?

A. Where do you have your sewing machine set up? If it's in a spare bedroom, keep the door shut all the time and don't allow the pets in.

Don't worry about it turning yellow, that usually takes years. Don't store it in plastic, fabric needs to breathe.

When I'm working on a sewing project, I fold and leave everything on my sewing table and cover it with a large towel or sheet. But this would mean that your sewing machine is off limits to the pets. Hang it on hangers in a closet, keep the door closed. Find a wedding dress size garment bag. You will need it to take your dress to the venue, if you're getting dressed there. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=gown+garment+bag&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11207277680036770913&sa=X&ei=cjhZT9O1DofliAKG3YimCw&ved=0CJABEPMCMAE

Totally cool that you're making your own dress. Makes your dress all the more special. My mom made hers and when we were kids, my sister & I thought it was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen.

What Colors To Paint Our New Home?
Q. Me and my husband just proudly bought our first home and we are looking for advice on paint colors. What is Nice and refreshing, yet will not outdate. We want to be quite colorful (not just white) without being 'Oh My' (if you know what i mean). For Master bedroom, Guest rooms, Family room, kitchen, lounge room, bathroom (Pretty Much the entire house lol). And theme ideas for 3 year olds. Was thinking of the disney film Cars but they outgrow that kind of thing pretty quick, as parents would know.

All ideas, opinions are greatly appreciated!

A. My parents LOVE magnolia (like a creamy light-yellow colour) Bathroom- Mabye blue, water etc.
Bedrooms- Should be dark colours, or in the summer you probably wont sleep!, mabye dark blue, i love it!
Kids bedroom- Ask them what they like and even let them help you decorate it, that should avoid any problems.
