Adding a valance can help define the opening of the window and lessen bright overhead light from coming in at the top of the windows. It also opens up the window so the room can be lit evenly during the day. Add a colorful or themed shade for privacy at night.


Consider using your childs toys as wall decor. This can serve two purposes - as decoration and to save on storage space. You can create hooks to hang larger toys and add shelves to display the smaller ones. Now if you can only get your kids to put them away!

You can always add paintings and prints in strategic places but make sure they are appropriate to the room. If you can afford it, consider having a wall or room mural painted on the walls in your childs favorite theme such as a magical forest, sports or race cars.

Decorate with photos of your childs most fondest memories. Family pictures of fun vacations or photos of your child on a day of achievement can add a personal touch to his or her room.

Rubber duckies are always cute. My sister's kids' bathroom had a whole makeover just by adding a new shower curtain, toothbrush holder, rug, and framed photo all of rubber duckies. I think she got the stuff at WalMart. I love it for a kids' bathroom.

A cute unisex idea for a bedroom is a jungle theme or even just using coordinating colors on the bedding. A red, white, and blue patriotic theme would be really cute, and easy too. One could have a navy blue comforter and the other could have a red comforter with white sheets. Then you can find all kinds of stars and stripes stuff cheap at thrift stores and again, at WalMart/Kmart/TJ Maxx - whatever you have near you. Good luck!

kids birthday party ideas?

Have a bithday party to arrange for a 6yo. Like home parties with traditional games etc; but have done that in past years, would have liked an entertainer but it costs nearly £200 for 2 hours - anyone got any good, tried and tested ideas to entertain about 20-25 kids?

If the genders are mixed, I'd advise staying away from anything that is based in competition. The reason I say this is that this is supposed to be a happy event, and inevitably, if you have two teams, one team is going to end up "the losers". You want all of the kids to leave having had a good time, so your choices for events come down to three basic categories:
1) chaotic fun: either as one big whole group or by breaking them up into smaller groups. As a big group, think something that's fun and messy and without much structure. Getting that many 6 yo's to focus on "the rules" is going to be nigh impossible. Something fun, messy, and chaotic is always good. The suggestion of water balloon fights is always fun, just so long as the children don't gang up against any other kid they perceive to be "weaker".
2) creative collaboration: If you have a fence in the backyard or off to the side that you don't mind having "colored", you can give each of the kids a section and have them paint whatever they want on their own little area. It encourages them to share paints, be creative, and leaves a memory of the celebration.
3) individual expression: Alternately, you can pick up fairly cheap canvases from you local art store or even old sheets from your local used clothing store. Pin these up to the fence in sections (one for each child) or as one big long mural (for them all to contribute to). If you make them individual segments, it gives the children something that they can take home as a souvenir of the fun time they had at your place. If it's one big mural, it can be hung in your son's/daughter's bedroom for a while or just stored as a lasting memento of his/her birthday.

Another really cheap/fun "theme" that can be carried through the day is the idea of a "Photo Journal". Have them decorate a sheet of construction paper on one side. Fold the paper in half. On one side, you're going to stick a list with all of their creative projects and the "Passport" gets filled up during the day.

For example, have the children make up a superhero or an imaginary friend or animal or any sort of alter-ego that they can pretend to be. Use face paints to make it more fun and help them feel more like a tiger, or superhero, or rosey-cheeked doll, or whatever. Snap a Polaroid of each child and have them glue their secret identity into their Journal on the non-list page. Have them decorate the other side of the paper.
It's simple, cheap, yet allows the children to be creative. Children, especially at that age, are highly creative when given the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild. They may need a little coaxing, but give them the opportunity to sit around and lead a story, and you'll see what I mean.

Also, as you're thinking of these activities, think of cheaper alternatives. These things don't have to be expensive; you're not trying to impress a bunch of adults with a swank cocktail party catered by some chi-chi French restaurant. These are children, and the thing to remember about children ISN'T that they're easily amused, but they appreciate the simpler things because they haven't become jaded...yet. Apply this when it comes to food and the kids will be much happier. For example...

Children love being tactile, so keep that in mind and let them have at it as much as possible... after washing their hands, of course. Get some or make your own cookie dough. Have the kids design and color their own cookies with icing, or chocolate chips, or even non-traditional cookie-things like gummy worms, licorice, or even marshmallows. Have them think up a name for their one-of-a-kind-cookie and write that in their Journal. Take a Polaroid of the cookie and stick it into their journal.
NOTE: Make sure to do the cookies towards the start of the party to make sure that all of the cookies are baked and done for when it's time for them to leave.

Pizza can be expensive, and not everyone's going to be happy with what's ordered - especially considering there are some REALLY finicky children out there. Instead, give them an English Muffin half or two, let them coat the top with sauce, and them have a bunch of different pizza toppings out on the table for them to design their own mini-pizzas. It's cheaper than Dominoes and again, they get to be creative. To make it different from the Polaroid of the cookie (and to help you keep each child's pizza separate!), have stamps (or stickers) that represent each topping. As they bring you their creation to put in the over, you stamp their journal according to what's on their pizza. Bam - easy to match up the pizza with the child and another activity done.

Finally, I don't know if it's customary where you live to send the children home with goodie-bags of treats and toys like it is here in the U.S. These bags can get expensive really quickly if you buy everything that you put in there. A really simple solution is to fill it up with stuff that the children have created or stuff that they can share with their parents when they go home. The Journal concept gives you a star with the sorts of things you can fill it with (cookies, photos, canvas paintings, etc.). It also gives the parents something to relate to visually - especially considering many children are highly susceptible to severe outbreaks of narrative tangents.

Just remember to watch the pacing of your activities: too much activity can burn them out too soon; too little can make them bored and restless.

EDIT: Bobbiegreen had a really good idea about the video-birthday-card for the birthday boy/girl. Those sorts of things are the best to lean towards. Not to slight shafermeyer, but unless your son/daughter is really into sports/dressing up, there is no need to have any aspect focused on gender roles. Playing "dress up" is one thing as it encourages creativity and imagination. The danger with the fashion show idea is it can inadvertently yet easily send and establish an archetype to your daughter that to be feminine or to be a woman, you are to be like these on the runway. Women in today's society have enough outside sources bombarding them with "what it means to be a woman". Do we really need it coming from within the home too?
Now, if the focus was re-directed on the designing of the clothes (perhaps you buy white t-shirts for everyone and everyone designs their own shirt with glitter, puff-paints, etc...), then the message can become a celebration of the creativity. There's no need for these little 6 yo girls trying to look sexy, sexual, or adult. Not unless you want your daughter to end up in a GirlsGoneWild video because her perspective on female sexuality wasn't allowed to grow into it on her own because it was thrust upon her at such an early age.
Paris Hilton is not, can not, will now, nor should ever be someone for young girls to aspire towards.

New bedroom advice!!!!!?

basicly the house i live in with my family is getting extended and after that is done i will have my own room instead of sharing a room with my sister. Im 15 and i am a bit of a colourful person so i have a few ideas of what i would like but not sure how they will look....

1. The walls painted white with really random paintbrush splashes over the white, white wooden furniture, and my fave colour (fushia pink) duvet cover and pillow cover.
2. The walls painted blue, orange, purple and green, white furniture and just a plain white bed and pillow cover.
3. The walls white but the main wall painted a neon colour, but the white walls will have framed photo collages and just random wall decorations, white furniture and the duvet and pillow cover to different neon colour.

I do have more ideas but these were the ones i couldnt decide between...... so please can you say which one you like the best or give me an idea that you think will look good.

Btw the furniture has to be white.

1. The random paint splashes sounds cute, but it will look too busy if you do it on all the walls. If you go for just one accent wall with paint splashes it will look much better. I love the idea of white and fuschia!
2. I just don't like this one. All 4 walls in different colors is too much for me. My little sister had a room like this as a kid and it looked like a disaster.

Not unless you want your daughter to end up in a GirlsGoneWild video because her perspective on female sexuality wasn't allowed to grow into it on her own because it was thrust upon her at such an early age.
Paris Hilton is not, can not, will now, nor should ever be someone for young girls to aspire towards.

Bedding in icecream colors. Lamps/floor mat shaped like ice cream cones. Find an antique ice cream maker for displaying. A cushy chair with ice cream pillows. Find a way to bring ice cream scoops into the decor. Also floats and milk shakes, ice cream sandwhiches....window coverings like bedding.

Curtain and Bed set ideas for a Blue walled Bedroom with grey white carpet?

I have a Columbia blue room. On 2 walls there are 2 colors sponged on but very lightly( green and a kind of pale yellow. On the 2 other walls there is the Columbia blue but then there are darker streaks of blue. I did not paint these walls, or choose the colors, but it is not an option to repaint. I am tying to get new curtains and new bed set. For my windows there is a white rim. Do you guys have any ideas for what I could get? Well, you seem to have a good attitude about it so I commend you for that.

You definitely need to stay away from any kind of pattern in your fabrics. Go with one color and I would imagine the lighter the better, I'd imagine. White or pale yellow might be good.

Or one option might be to EMBRACE THE COLUMBIA BLUE since it is the unifying color in all the walls! Maybe get white curtains and bedspread but go with the columbia blue in all your pillows and accessories with some white accents, too!

Here's an idea that could help cover the busy walls and should be inexpensive. Though the photo shows several busy fabrics in the hoops (or in any shape) on a plain wall - reverse it! If you decide on a specific color then put that in hoops of several sizes to maybe tone down the walls.

One idea I might suggest is to pick which 2 wall colors you could easiest live with, then cover the other two walls with something.

Since you cannot paint, how about ceiling to floor and wall to wall curtains? Pick one of the colors from the walls you will keep exposed, or use white, and get plain colored sheets and hang them on the walls. Ikea has great ideas on how to hang curtains but if your budget is really low, just hang them flat with staples or push pins.

I would stick to a few colors so that your room looks more put together. Take posters, 3 different ones from say pokemon, have them in in black or white or in black background with just the characters in color, then have them in different sized squares, mount them on a wall just about your shoulders so that they are an inch apart from each other. below are some photos that might help you out.

What do you do with the prints from a boudoir photo shoot?

Its become a huge thing to give to your fiance for a wedding present and I like the idea. I have NO IDEA what is done with the photos. I don't want to spend $500 for pics that will get tossed or store them in a box that my kids will find in 15 years. Has anyone done them and if so what did you do with them?

Does anyone have any good ideas of things to send? Or things that would be useful? Some things I sent hubby:
-summertime I sent a "Summer Fun Box", beach balls, frisbee, stick to door basketball hoop, nerf balls, etc.,
-things and snacks that i knew he would like. I also sent him things that his friends liked to because they didn't get much.

-lots of cards and letters
-I also sent him a box full of unused cards such as thinking of you, Christmas Cards, Birthday Cards, Miss you cards, etc., that he could send back home to family and friends. It is hard to find cards there.

-Sent him themed Care Packages (some can be as cute as you want and some can be as adult as you make it). One time I took a picture of our front door closed from the outside. Then a picture of the front door open and a picture of the floor. Then a picture of my shirt on the floor, then a picture of my shoes on the floor, then my socks on the floor, then my pants on the floor, then took a picture of my bra on the floor, then I took a picture of my undies on the floor, then I took a picture of our bedroom, then I took a picture of just the bed. Then put a little note that said wish you were here, miss you in my bed. Something like that. Remember though to take the pictures while making your way to the bedroom with the stuff on the floor so it looks like you are dropping your colthes on the way to the bedroom.
-Another thing you can do: buy a new pillowcase. Every night before you go to bed, take a shower but leave your hair a little damp before getting into bed. After a week, the pillowcase will smell like you. Package this up in a ziploc baggie and send a note with it "Something to remind you of me".
-Write in a journal. I sent this to hubby after every 2-3 months. Of course he still got plently of cards and letters but the journal was more thoughtful and more personal. I would write in it right before I went to bed. I wrote everything down, just like a regular journal. My feelings, what i did, what I ate, something that was funny to me that day, something that made me think of him that day, that I spoke to so and so, what the kids did, etc.,,. I then sent that to him. You know that sometimes we always don't get that long phone call or forget to tell them certain things by the time we do talk to them. Or letters that we don't want to make to long because we don't have the time. Hubby loved this because he said it still made him feel close to me and the kids even though he was gone for a year.
-Send him a photo album. I also have an 11 page attachment if you would like it that have different themed care packages that i have put together through hubby's deployments. These theme care packages make it a little more fun to shop for when you have a certain theme in mind. I have used many of them and then you can just talior it to your hubby. -Another thing you can do: buy a new pillowcase. Every night before you go to bed, take a shower but leave your hair a little damp before getting into bed. After a week, the pillowcase will smell like you. Package this up in a ziploc baggie and send a note with it "Something to remind you of me".
-Write in a journal. I sent this to hubby after every 2-3 months. Of course he still got plently of cards and letters but the journal was more thoughtful and more personal. I would write in it right before I went to bed. I wrote everything down, just like a regular journal. My feelings, what i did, what I ate, something that was funny to me that day, something that made me think of him that day, that I spoke to so and so, what the kids did, etc.,,. I then sent that to him. You know that sometimes we always don't get that long phone call or forget to tell them certain things by the time we do talk to them. Or letters that we don't want to make to long because we don't have the time. Hubby loved this because he said it still made him feel close to me and the kids even though he was gone for a year.

My husband has been over in Afghanistan for about a week now and I am sending him a care package, but I'm not quite sure what kind of stuff to send him! Plus, it's his birthday and I wanted to get him something for that as well, but most of the ideas I come up with would be useless to him over there. You need a waffle cone pattern headboard - shaped like a cone with icecream - or just the waffle pattern. or a large vintage ice cream ad board.

Bedding in icecream colors. Lamps/floor mat shaped like ice cream cones. Find an antique ice cream maker for displaying. A cushy chair with ice cream pillows. Find a way to bring ice cream scoops into the decor. Also floats and milk shakes, ice cream sandwhiches....window coverings like bedding.

My fiance was deployed a while ago, I sent him a package with an auto magazine, photo album, some fruit snacks, hand sanitizer.. a few other odds and ends. Does anyone have any good ideas of things to send? Or things that would be useful? I sent him the build a bear with voice recording a couple months ago, and an Easter basket with candy and fun things.. Any other ideas!? Thank you so much for your feedback!
