How do I decorate a toddler's bedroom without breaking the bank?

Little Bug

I need to turn my son's plain nursury into a toddler boys room, but I;m not sure what to do.

Paint isnt cheap ( I dont care what you say, an 11X12 bedroom will cost us $100 to paint), and we have a crib that converts to a toddler bed, only problem is that they no longer sell the guard rail that converts it to a toddler bed (It's target's do your room nursury crib). A friend gave us an elecric blue and yellow plastic/metal bed, (no stickers, it was spongebob I think) but I can't find any toddler rooms that seem to not look cheap/cheesey with the plastic/metal beds, or rooms that are not girly with the crib to daybed option. Plus I can't find a guard. The twin bed guards don't work with toddler mattresses

Am I going to have to shell out $50+ for a wooden toddler bed, plus table+chair set ($50), toy organizer ($59), Posters ($9.99+Frames), Bedding ($40)?

..

Thats $224!!!!!!..at least!!

Anyone know if building the stuff is cheaper? Is it easy? I don't have a lot of tools (nor do I live by an Ikea), so buying plans won't help me very much.

ANy ideas?

I've tried Craigslist, consignment stores, 'goodwill stores', and none of them have any of the stuff I'm looking for. Not even a plastic table or toybox, or they have it and it's used...abused.. and $10 less then the new stuff

I'm burnt out and wondering how to do this for him without shelling out $300 in cash

Answer
Hey i have a toddler myself, and i know what you mean!
You want to make it more grown up and colourful but not not spend alot of money!

If your in australia, you can go to spotlight, they have packs of kids furniture, such as say a toddler bad and some cupboards.Or just the beds, in characters, and they are reasonably cheap! It will last him till he is big enough for a single bed! Also they sell like tables and chairs!
But if you do not wish to go out and buy this new, id say just go to target or a store thats similiar and just buy a clip on rail. I think they are like $30. (or ebay)

Go to your local baby stores, and check out thier sales on decor for rooms. For my daughter i just picked up a pack (think there was 6-7) wooden decorations that you just stick on the wall. They are like princess theme, so castles and so on, they arent big maybe like 10cm x 10cm... and i think that was like $20. I dont know where your located (please tell me =]) cause i got these at baby kingdom! (Im in australia)
But alot of baby stores have sale bins on decor for rooms. You can usually find alot of nice things cheap!

Or if you really dont have time or money to search. You can just get old wrapping paper (that is in good condition) with nice prints for boys such as cars and so on (if you have non just go to a dicsount store and buy a sheet for $1!) and frame these. I have in my daiughters room, in a frame, the first wrapping paper she ever got from a gift when she was born. Its soo cute and is sentamental aswell! You can do this aswell with gift bags you have laying around!

Or you could simply get your son to draw pictures of his favourite things on bright coloured paper and frame this! And when he has friends or family over he can show it off!! Lets him contribute!

Hmm think thats all i can think of at the time sorry lol, we did so many things like this, not just to save money, but so its unique and different!

hope its helped!
goodluck!!
I will add any more ideas i come up with! =]

Anyone moved to Glasgow from another country? What were your experiences?

Psyche

I'm trying to get some personal responses on your experiences. I'm from Australia and would like to live there. Any ideas, suggestions, stories? :) Thanks.

Answer
hello
i dont know if i could help but what i can give you is alot of personal experiance as i live in glasgow and have all my life.

glasgow is a very rainy city and moving from australia you would find it hard to adjust to the dull weather. you never know what its gonna b like, one minute its warm and sunny and 10 mins later its freezing and pouring.
winters are long and summers are ok but sometimes very short.

it is quite expensive so it is advised that you have a good job and savings to get by over here. i live in 2 bedroom flat with my husband and daughter which costs me 550 pounds per month! this is the average price for a cheap good quality 2 bedroom.
if you would like to look at flats you can go on the following websites...

www.s1rental.com
www.gilpro.com
www.lettingweb.com

the best area to live in is probably the west end although the southside is similar and cheaper. these are areas such as shawlands.

the food is good although most people i know tend to gain weight quickly when they move over here as they get carried away with the traditional fish and chips, pizza etc...haha
there are alot of local grocers and supermarkets though and you will never be far away from local 24 hour newsagents which sell pretty much everything!

people are very friendly.very welcoming and like to party, enjoy themselves and socialise so finding friends wont be difficult!

if you have kids there are many nurseries around. private nurseries are quite expensive and state nurseries are good depending on which one you choose. those are free. the same goes for public schools.

there are quite a few activities you can do....
lots of leisure centres, cinemas, good restaurants, bars and clubs, lots of hillwalking and adventure parks you can have all sorts of activities in, many local parks(clean and quiet), toddler/mother grops, summer activities for children which are cheap, a few festivals in the summer and so on...

there are also many colleges uni's and jobs available all the time.
there are many ways to get around if you dont have a car.
buses, trains, undergrounds, taxi's which are all pretty cheap.

if there is anything else you would like to ask my email is laurtay1989@yahoo.com.
feel free to ask about anything at all!!

good luck

How are taxes calculated in Australia. Are the taxes paid from the salary automatically.
I am a Post graduate Acoustic engineer with 5 years experience in Architectural and Industrial Acoustic Consultancy in the Middleast.

My family comprises of my wife and three children aged 10, 7 and 4.

What would be the rent of a three bedroom house, School fees per child, Average Petrol expenses for 50Kms per day, Utility bills (water, electricity, parking), food & supplies expense...etc
I am particularly interested in Brisbane. What is the typical rent for a three bedroom apartment/house in Brisbane.

Answer
It depends on your qualifications and profession as to what you can ask for in terms of salary. It also depends on what state you want to live in. For example, Sydney has a higher cost of living (rent, food, petrol) than Brisbane, however, their average pay is more. For people living permanently in Australia, if your kids go to a public school, they are essentially "free" - you'll have to pay for books, uniform, excursions etc. I'm not sure if you're not a permanent resident that you'll get this or not. Petrol depends on where you live. Right now it's between $1.12 and $1.26 per litre for Sydney north (it fluctuates throughout the week). Rent for Sydney (for 4 bedroom) varies depending on the area. Go to a real-estate website in Australia and look up the rental section to get an idea of what you get in what area. Electricity bills depend on how much you use too. Usually a few hundred a quarter for electricity (if you don't have an airconditioner and lots or heaters running all the time). Phone depends on usage + line rental. Maybe if you want to compare countries, a local call at a pay phone is 50 cents flatrate. Water bills may be included in your rent if you live in an apartment.

You may find some useful information about Australia and its people at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (http://www.abs.gov.au/).

The average weekly earnings is a bit over $1000 per week (before tax).

Moving to Switzerland from America?

When I was young I believed America used to be the best, is the best, and will always be the best country in the whole world. Growing up I am quickly realizing that America is going down the toilet with crazy socialist, corrupt government, and lazy bums that just want welfare. If I don't go to college I am planning on moving to Switzerland and I would like to know if that's a good idea? Do they have any weird crazy laws? Is it easy to get a job there? Health care? Please answer :)

Answer
Hate to be a downer bud but when you speak of 'crazy socialist' and 'welfare'... fact is most of the most advanced countries in the world have what many in the USA categorize as 'socialist' welfare programs.

Take Canada for example, The International magazine 'The Economist' recently judged 140 cities and three Canadian cities ended up in the top five. Another international think tank deems Canada as the best G20 country to be a woman... yet we have healthcare, government subsidies and welfare programs a plenty.
That's a huge part of why many think such countries are top ranked.

Define 'crazy laws'
No special interest group laws like granting gays or lesbians or Jews or Muslims or Sikhs etc etc special privileges?
Counties like Canada have no such laws - the true expression of freedom. Intolerance for any reason is frowned upon and the government couldn't careless about your love-life or bedroom. Gay marriage, totally legal here. What do we care how people live their lives [as long as kids aren't involved in a bad way]

"Policies that promote gender equality, safeguards against violence and exploitation and access to healthcare make Canada the best place to be a woman among the world's biggest economies, a global poll of experts showed on Wednesday."
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/13/us-g20-women-idUSBRE85C00420120613

Three Canadian cities are among the world's top five most livable cities. The survey ranks 140 cities based on a number of factors, including health care, stability, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Vancouver was the highest-ranked Canadian city, coming in third with an overall score of 97.3; Toronto came in fourth at 97.2; and Calgary tied for fifth place with Adelaide, Australia, at 96
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1242459--economist-magazine-ranks-toronto-vancouver-calgary-among-world-s-top-5-most-livable-cities

Last issue - most countries including the USA wouldn't accept anyone as an immigrant without say, college or some professional skill.

A thought. You love the USA, so you should - great country.
Why go all the way across the world dude? Study in Canada, give a country with the same things your looking for in Switzerland a shot. Like it, awesome. Don't like it, the change of heart is only a drive across the border away.

"More than 90,000 students come to study in Canada every year and even more come to Canada to learn English or French. Foreign students bring a rich culture to our classrooms. Your knowledge and skills are welcome in our schools."
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp

Canadian economy - terrific. Things cost more here than in the USA - but them again Canadians on average earn more. Inflation was down this month. Jobs are out there [I have 3 lol]

Food for thought perhaps.

Heart set on Switzerland, here's their Immigration site:

Living cost in Sydney, Australia?

Rajesh Sin

Hi,
What is the monthly living costs in sydney for a family of 3(2 adults + 1 kid) on various expenses like rentals(furnished/unfurnished), internet, mobile phone, grocery, transportation to office, gas & petrol, Pre-Schooling for child etc.
i am being offered a annual salary of 73.5K Australian dollors, please let me know if this amount is ok ?
How much would be the tax outgo?

Thanks

Answer
If you are not on a PR then it will cost 4K for pre-school (if over 4 years). Under this age it will be very hard to get a place if your wife is not working (as that is what these facilities are for). 70K is mid-high for Sydney (well above new graduate salary) but for Sydney you need to have both partners working to live well (so a 120-150K combined salary is needed). For 70K you will need to live 50-60km out from the City to get a house to rent (closer and you will be lucky to get a 2 bedroom flat). Rent should be between $250 (low end) to $400 for a house (western Sydney 50K) to $400-600 for a 2 bedroom flat 10K from Sydney (a week). Furnished places are not common and are usually for businessmen and will be in the range of 1000K a week - so this is out of your price range. Internet is around $50 a month, mobile phone - depends how much you use it. Groceries for family of 3 - low end $200 a week. Public transport - max of $57 a week on the weekly pass.

The main consideration is that this is a good salary. The problem with many immigrants ideas is that in Sydney to live, BOTH partners work - you can count the number of married women who have children and dont work, on a single hand almost. Staying home to look after your child is a luxury your wife will not be able to afford if you wish to do more than just "pay the bills".

Anyone know where I can buy the furniture for this room?

Soph

http://kidsbadroomideas.com/cool-bedroom-ideas-for-kids-and-teenagers.html (It's the seventh one down, the pink teenage girls room)

I want to get the stuff for that room and re-do my bedroom sooo badly but I a) don't know where to buy the furniture (just the big desk, chair and cupboard, I have a bed that would match already) or b) how much it would cost (how much to save up).
Please!!!! Help me!! Are there some shops (in Brisbane or Toowoomba, AUSTRALIA) or online sites I can look at??
AGAIN: I'm in AUSTRALIA (If there are some in America or England or wherever else, still tell me so I can look but I would prefer to have Australian things so it's easier to get to me :))
10 points and a massive THANKYOU to the best answer!!
Soph x

Answer
According to the website, that modular furniture, made in Italy by Tumidei, is available in New Caledonia.

http://www.tumidei.it/home_eng.htm

But if you have an IKEA store near you in Australia they have a lot of similar products. Or print out the photo and take it to a custom cabinet fitting contractor who could fit up something similar.

It would probably cost you at least 2 or 3 thousand dollars or more to create that exact room as shown there. But if you have a dad or uncle who is a good carpenter, you could buy standard wardrobes and drawer units from a builder supply store and they could make the platforms, bed and desk from wood and hardware and you could paint them yourself to match the colors. You might be able to do that for under $1000.
