I'm trying to get some personal responses on your experiences. I'm from Australia and would like to live there. Any ideas, suggestions, stories? :) Thanks.

Answer
hello
i dont know if i could help but what i can give you is alot of personal experiance as i live in glasgow and have all my life.

glasgow is a very rainy city and moving from australia you would find it hard to adjust to the dull weather. you never know what its gonna b like, one minute its warm and sunny and 10 mins later its freezing and pouring.
winters are long and summers are ok but sometimes very short.

it is quite expensive so it is advised that you have a good job and savings to get by over here. i live in 2 bedroom flat with my husband and daughter which costs me 550 pounds per month! this is the average price for a cheap good quality 2 bedroom.
if you would like to look at flats you can go on the following websites...

www.s1rental.com
www.gilpro.com
www.lettingweb.com

the best area to live in is probably the west end although the southside is similar and cheaper. these are areas such as shawlands.

the food is good although most people i know tend to gain weight quickly when they move over here as they get carried away with the traditional fish and chips, pizza etc...haha
there are alot of local grocers and supermarkets though and you will never be far away from local 24 hour newsagents which sell pretty much everything!

people are very friendly.very welcoming and like to party, enjoy themselves and socialise so finding friends wont be difficult!

if you have kids there are many nurseries around. private nurseries are quite expensive and state nurseries are good depending on which one you choose. those are free. the same goes for public schools.

there are quite a few activities you can do....
lots of leisure centres, cinemas, good restaurants, bars and clubs, lots of hillwalking and adventure parks you can have all sorts of activities in, many local parks(clean and quiet), toddler/mother grops, summer activities for children which are cheap, a few festivals in the summer and so on...

there are also many colleges uni's and jobs available all the time.
there are many ways to get around if you dont have a car.
buses, trains, undergrounds, taxi's which are all pretty cheap.

if there is anything else you would like to ask my email is laurtay1989@yahoo.com.
feel free to ask about anything at all!!

good luck

Living expenses for a family of 5 per month in the USA?

Jodie T

Hi, I'm a single mum very interested in moving from Australia to America and I'd like to get an idea of living expenses for a family of 5 per month in the USA? I am able to buy a home outright and have four children (ages 2, 8, 12 and 16) to be schooled, in the Arkansas area. Thank you.

Answer
Interesting question... :)

I guess we should start with what you mean when you say "buy a house outright". If you mean to actually purchase a home outright (no mortgage) then your first expense is whatever the price of the house is. You'll probably need a four bedroom at least, and that's if two of your kids share a room for a while. In AK, that will probably run about 140K. If you mortgage, its the principal minus your deposit, plus the interest divided by the duration of the mortgage. Assuming a fifteen thousand dollar deposit on a 140K house, for a twenty year lease, that's $583 a month.

In AK you'll need a lot of insurance for different reasons. Between homeowner's insurance and auto insurance, add another 200 to the 583.

You'll need a car and gas. Figuring a $150 a month lease and two full tanks of gas at 2.25 a gallon (*10 gallon tank), add another $195 a month.

Utilities: between gas/oil, water, and electricity, add another 300.

Cable/Internet/Phone: In the US, these packages are becoming more and more popular as more cable companies offer them. Add another 120 a month.

Finally, tally up your average food budget and convert that to US dollars, add that to the $1,398 in expenses so far, and you'll have a pretty good estimate of your future costs. Hope this helped.
