what is the safest and non toxic stain or paint for the crib and dresser?

Q. For a baby... I am due in Feb and Mom and I are going to be setting up the nursery. We are using my dresser I had as a kid in my bedroom at my parent's house and a crib that a lady is selling. We want to paint it lavender and refinish it. What type of brand of paint do you guys suggest that we look at that is safe for cribs and dressers?

A. We have used FreshAire paint on the walls in our house. It should be ok for cribs and dressers too. It has no VOCs, so there's no yucky chemical smell. We got it at Home Depot.

There are other types of no VOC paint, but that would be the best one to use.

For the crib that you're buying, just make sure it's modern enough to be safe!

Murals for Kids bedrooms and nurseries, how to get started?
Q. I have always been artistic and have wanted to get into the business of painting rooms for children, murals in daycares and window painting. Can someone tell me how to get started? I can create a web page and make flyers, but how do you charge and what is the going rate? Any tips would be appriciated.

A. You definitley need a portfolio. Set up your web page, show some work. If you don't have much to show, go to friends and neighbors, family and offer to do some freebies and work for cost of material. Invest in a good camera.
Get a business card going, make a notecard with your business card, something that has all your info and examples of your work.
Take your portfolio and card to local businesses, home builders, contractors, paint stores will sometimes hand them out.
I'm in OK, and also a muralist and art teacher.
Make sure you add in gas/mileage..And never give your ideas out for free. When working with a potential client, set up a consultation and charge a nominal fee, to cover gas and your talent and time. If they hire you, you take of the fee when you give final charge.
I've had people take my ideas I worked on and then give it to a family member to do the work.
Word of mouth will take you far!!

Help, I have black mold all over the base boards in my kids bedroom. How do I get rid of it?
Q. It is making my kids and husband sick. They all have asthma and or allergies. This winter has been really cold and the house shut up alot. I need to get rid of it.
Any advice?
Thank you.

A. It is true common bleach can be effective in killing mold but it is more difficult than most imagine. i will explain why. 1) What does bleach do? It bleaches items out. This is the most common reason for mold mitigation that has been done with bleach being ineffective. Most people see that it is no longer visible and assume that the problem is resolved. 2) Bleach has a shelf life. most manufactures create it for use in laundry and give it a shelf life of up to 9 months. This posses a problem when attempting mold removal with this product. I am sure if you view television shows such as "Flip This House" you will see individuals try to perform this type of mitigation by using bleach and it turns out they are not successful. So now that I have told you why not to use bleach let me allow to tell you what I would do. First you need to create a critical barrier. This can be done by using a minimum of 4 mil plastic and a tape on zipper (this can be bought at home depot, Lowe's, etc). You will want to use painters tape around the entire door frame including the flooring. Put in on wide. rough cut the plastic. Now use spray adhesive and spray the tape. Let it tak up and place the plastic on the tape, use your hands to smooth out any areas where air could pass. Now place the zipper on. Since you aren't going to buy a air scrubber you can create negative air by placing a fan blowing out a window. These 2 steps are done to reduce the possibility of cross contamination, also tape up the vents in the room. Now you have 2 choices clean or replace. I suggest for you to replace. You do not have the ability to know that you have cleaned it all without taking samples and having them tested at a lab. Buy contractor bags, I prefer the brand Husky these can be found at home depot. Remove the affected areas cut and place in bag, spray inside with adhesive spin and tie a knot. Once all affected areas have been placed in bags remove from home, just throw it out the window so you are not taking it through your home. Purchase a fungicide, if this can not be found a fungistat will work. These to can be purchased at home depot or Lowe's. Clean entire area with this go ahead and wipe the walls off also. You will want to vacuum any dust up as well. The key is to clean it very thoroughly. Let the fan create negative air for 3 days after and inspect. If it looks good paint affected area with killz primer. I know this seams tedious but this is Truly how to fix this problem. If you have more questions or if it seems like to big of a task you can contact me at my website http://thekenjerfix.com . Good luck.
