What are some noises that remind you of summer?

Q. I can hear a lawnmower right now and I think it is such a summery noise.

A. watermelons splitting open with knifed gasp

peas thunking into the bowl as they are shelled

the wind rustling millions of leaves up in the cottonwood trees as I lie in the hammock

the quiet snipping of my mother's rose shears

a page being turned in a book

steaks hitting the grill

the sprinkler rhythmically jetting its course back and forth over the lawn

THAT FLY IN THE BEDROOM AFTER I GO TO BED

the boooiiiing of the diving board and splash as some kid plunges in a second later

the crack of a baseball connecting with a bat...the audience beginning to yell all at once

balloons being inflated at the fair

ice tinkling in glasses on the porch

the ice cream truck's tinny little song

bicycle wheels with playing cards fitted into the tires to make that clacking sound

the whine of mosquitoes

What's the best way to organize kids toys?
Q. my neice has so many toys and she has one big box in her room and two totes in the dining room. She lives with my mom so I do.

I don't clean house because of all these toys. They all pile up as I just throw them in boxes.

A. Throwing them in boxes or big colorful laundry baskets is about all you can do, unless you want to also invest in like these stuffed-animal-holding hammocks that anchor from corner to corner in a bedroom, and you want to buy wall-mounted shelves. If you want to save money, then just have a big box or two in her room and another box or big nice wicker basket in another room of the house. Before cleaning house, we used to have "5 minute cleanup", where everyone in the family would run like crazy people all over the house and throw any toy into a box. We always could get done, amazingly, in only 5 minutes, and then the surfaces would be clear enough for vacuuming and wiping.

Platform bed versus mattress and box spring?
Q. Have always had a mattress and box spring, but have recently been looking into a platform bed. Any opinions as to which one is better or offers more back support?
Any advice is welcome...

A. When our daughters were younger they all wanted to sleep in the same bedroom, so my husband built them a pair of platform beds with room underneath for dressers and play space. I asked him to build the beds for a couple of reasons - we were living in Texas and the winter weather was mild and didn't require much heat in the bedrooms - the platforms were five feet off the floor and because heat rises the girls were sleeping up where the heat was. The raised beds put the girls a little out of reach of the pests we found in Texas, too - snakes, rats, fleas in the carpets thanks to kittens, etc. In the summer there was enough space beneath the beds for the girls to sleep in hammocks if they wished.

The platform beds served the purpose very well and the kids slept in them until their late teens. They never had any back pain, and were kind of uncomfortable the first few months they slept in "real" beds. That said, those of us used to waterbeds or spring mattresses weren't so comfortable when we just rested momentarily on those bed. However, when my husband and I have needed to put a conventional matress in our waterbed frame (in housing not built for the weight of waterbeds) we made the adjustment quickly. It is much firmer, but not impossible to sleep on, even when 9 months pregnant.

I wish you luck making your decision, and I hope this answer helps you consider your requirements for both your bed and your bedroom space.
