Ideas for decorating a kids bedroom for 2 girls and a baby boy in a skull/pirate theme (girls 10 and 5,boy 1yr?

moi

Im looking for lots of ideas
it needs to be neutral without being too boyish
but also not girly, obviously...
it also needs to go with all the ages as well
I was thinking skulls for the girls since they like them
and more pirate for my son
but give me your ideas
with details like colors,etc...
thank you

Answer
yes go with a neutral color like soft green or baby blue but come back and use cling art stickers ( they peel off). they might have a pirate theme or a boat theme set. if not then bring in your theme with lamps and clocks and wall art. however i like the idea of using a glaze to stamp on a cross bones pattern to your wall in a border pattern around room.

Answer
As much fun as you might think it will be for them I agree with answer one. The relationship to a skull and crossbones is not at all cool for that age group. I've never in my life known a female that LIKED that?

I'm most curious about why they sleep in the same room, first of all???

On the cheap I'd go with the Pirates movie series posters with Johnny Depp.
Not knowing your budget but knowing children and that their tastes and moods can change daily if not hourly, I'd go with making it a tropical thing, even if it only suggests Pirate or Castaway, or Swiss family Robinson, etc.

Paint is cheap, foamcore cut outs of tropical vegetation, even a jungle theme with animals seems more enjoyable to me. Most especially for a 5 year old, what you suggest is stimulation and a cool place maybe to hang out, not a MY SPACE room that should be a place to relax.

How can I theme a bedroom around Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean?

Q. I'm doing this kid's bedroom, and he wants it themed around Pirates of the Caribbean the ride. He's 16 years old, and a HUGE Disneyland-fanatic. he doesn't want something corny or childish, but he wants to go all out. He wants an authentic, real-deal sort of room.

The room is large rectangular and has vaulted ceilings. He also wants it to be a little reminiscent of New Orleans Square. The painting job is already done, it's a tan base and it looks as if a pipe broke or something, cuz it appears to have water just pouring down and damaging the walls. He has a nice keyboard, and said he'd like that to be dressed up a bit more pirate-y. It has light oak panels which deters from the look he wants.

He has the PotC attraction poster, but would love more posters. I told him about Disney's print on demand system, and he was very excited, but what print(s) should I get? The room is spacious, and he hates it. He wants it to be like the ride, where you never see the same thing twice. very busy!
oh ya, he wants a desk as well (he's an artist). He said either a bar look, or whatever... Just something he could doodle on or write or jazz like that.

Thanks for your help!

We are traveling for the first time from Ohio to Disney World in December, any tips?

Lea J.

We are staying for 8 days at the Disney All Star music Resort.

This is our first visit, and also our first plane trip ever!!

Traveling are my husband, myself and our 4 year old son.

Any tips on How to surprise your child, What to pack, What parks to visit first...etc.

Thanks for ANY advice!!

Answer
This sounds great. I am a big fan of taking kids that age to Disney. The magic is very real there at that time. So, for a few tips.

Check the kid's backpack to make sure that they did not throw in a pair of scissors at the last minute. You don't want any security hassles.

One parent goes through security, then the kid, then the other parent. If the kid goes through first the security will NOT let you run after the child as he wanders off.

I really would not worry too much about the surprise. He really won't grasp what Disney World is until he sees it anyway. And, looking forward to the vacation is part of the fun. So, either order the free DVD so you can show him, or look online at pictures and show him. I like to watch Pirates of the Carribbean and then look at the picutes of the attraction. Or watch Dumbo and then think about that ride. You can watch Peter Pan and look at the pictures of that attraction where you fly through the bedroom and over London.

Many of the attractions are in dark rooms. You know, 3-d movies, and show type stuff. Some kids freak out when the lights to out. So, make sure you at least take him to a movie first so he gets used to sitting in the theatre.

The best time of day in the theme parks is first thing in the morning. Get moving so that you are at the gates a little before they open.

Character Autographs.. OK, some kids love to do these and some kids think Mickey looks like a 6 foot rodent that is missing some fingers. So, you have to roll with the punches on that one. He might love it, he might hate it. You can try some of the human characters like the princesses first. That might get him into the swing of it. Also, you need your own full sized pen to have the characters sign. We like to take a laundry marker and have them sign a Disney t-shirt. You have to put something like a magazine in a bag and insert that inside the shirt to provide a solid surface, and keep the marker from bleeding through. But, a few days later you ave a cool souvineer that you can wear.

Ice Cream can fix most problems at Walt Disney World. Hey, it is vacation so normal rules don't always apply.

The ferry boat to the Magic Kingdom is slower, but the monorail has a longer line. It usually works out about the same when it is busy first thing in the morning. Personally, I like to take the ferry on our first morning, especially in the winter. You can be huddled together with your jackets at the front of the ferry as the park gets slowly bigger. You leave the ferry and since you are a little early you find a place where you can look up and see Main Street Station. There is no need to crowd the gate. You will get in. The music changes and the steam train pulls into the station. All the characters get off the train and put on a little opening show. Then the gates open. You go under the train tracks, grabbing an English language map as you go through. You stroll right down mainstreet that is still wet-clean and smell the bakery. You already know what you want to do first so you stroll right to that attraction and begin the day. Man, I love it.

The closer you get to Christmas, the busier Walt Disney World gets. My guess is that this year starting at about the 23rd, it will be insane busy. Like you line up outside a burger restaurant just to get in and line up at the counter.

Learn how to use fastpass. It is quite simple but it saves you a little line time.

If you will be there for 8 days, you will have time to do just about everything. However, remember that the idea is to have fun for 8 days, not to do everything and stress to the point of breaking. I am looking at a picture of my family right now taken in front of the Living Seas by a cast member. My kids were about 2 and 4 in it. And it is toward the end of our vacation and the kids look beat. They were troopers, but we pushed pretty hard. I hope we were smart enough to take a break right after this and have some churros or something.

If it rains while you are there, put on a poncho and go do the parks. Disney in the rain can be lots of fun.

Take hats and mittens. Florida can get cold snaps. On one trip about that time of year we had to go to Wally World to buy these things before we went to the parks one morning. Money I did not need to spend, and really not a great way to start a day.

Take snacks for your kid.

Know what you want to do in the parks when you get there so you are not wasting time dealing with a map trying to figure out what sounds fun. It gives you a head start on the day and you can look at maps while you are in the first few lines.

Have fun with the planning. Don't stress about it. Once you figure out a few things, it is all fun. Don't let it stress you out. It is really pretty simple and quite fun.

The list goes on and on. Ask some more specific questions and you will get some great answers.

I wish I was going. Have fun.

Can you give me some advice on decorating my room (cool themes, interesting accessories, posters, etc.)?

Answer
It really all depends on what you are into...

I think a bedroom should be a place that is comfortable... a place to relax and get away from it all. So pick something (like a topic) you like alot and go with it... Or you can always pick one thing, and build around it...

For example, if you loved the movie Pirates of the Carribean, then you can do your room in that time period. I don't mean the cheesy kid stuff... I am talking about buying dark wood furniture, using materials common to that time period for your bedspreads and curtains, investing in antique swords, buying old looking parchment maps to frame and hang up, buying brass candle holders, getting antique books, etc.

In my life, I have had many themes in my bedroom...

I once did an outerspace kind of theme. I had an indoor Home Planetarium... I use to put the stars on my ceiling and listen to music... it is very relaxing. (example below)
http://shopping.discovery.com/product-28605.html
I also had beatiful posters/pictures of galaxies and planets, etc.

During my Japanese Garden theme days, I had paper lanterns, umbrellas and fans hanging up...
http://www.cherryblossomgardens.com/cpaper.htm
Also you can add small water rock waterfalls and stuff...
http://www.myfavoritethings.tv/gifts/furniture/waterfalls/indoor%20waterfalls/indoor%20waterfalls.shtml
Other accessories...
http://www.cherryblossomgardens.com/azen.asp

I am currently planning a "WWII" era bedroom... complete with WWII Pin-upgirls and other WWII memorabilia like model airplanes, old military hats, pins, patches, uniforms, etc ... Plus things like Old Coke Bottles, music records, celebrity pictures, etc...

There is so much you can go with... It is really up to you.

I have decorated rooms in my house based around one object that I owned and loved. Like my mom had this beautiful large antique vanity made of mahogony engraved wood with a marble slab on top. She did her whole room in Victorian because of that one piece of furntiture.

Let your hobbies, your hopes and dreams, your fantasies help you decorate your room... Do you have a favorite book? A favorite song? A favorite artist?

Here are some cool themes in my opinion...

Moulin Rouge/Cabaret Theme-- almost like a brothel style room heavy on red satins and velvets... feather boas, glitter and gold, posters of famous cabaret dancers, etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moulin_Rouge
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabaret

Carnvial/Mardi Gras Theme-- Think Rio de Janeiro meets Burbon Street, New Orleans... Lots of bright colors, beads and feathers, masks, hats, jazz/blues music...

Knights in Shining Armor -- Dragons and Unicorns and A Princess in Distress... lots of Middle Age/Renaissance type stuff...blue velvet, paintings of castles and lots of historical romance books. Look to the Arthurian legends and Pre-Raphaelite Art Prints for ideas...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-Raphaelite_Brotherhood

Best wishes and have fun decorating...

I need ideas on how to paint my boys bedroom?

sonia s

I have 2 boys (ages 7 & 4) that share a fairly large bedroom. I want to paint it with some cool design that they'll like now and when they get older. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
The best ideas I've found for boys bedrooms are http://boysthemebedrooms.com/. There are some great themes that you can do by purchasing or making the items shown. I also found this site (http://www.decorating-kids-rooms.net/bedroom-themes-for-children.html) which talks specifically about "How To Create Bedroom Themes For Children That Grow With Your Child".

Right now it seems to be that for your 4 and 7 year olds, a pirate theme would be fantastic. Maybe paint a wall mural of a beach and sunset on one wall. Then as they grow older they can add things to it - like kids playing sports on the beach, pirate treasure in the sand, or just enjoying the peaceful scene.

You know your kids and their interests - have a ball with them and let them decide. My daughter loves pirates and Egyptians. So I'm focusing on the treasure and tying the two interests together that way.

Jennifer S

For those who have been there, whats good and whats bad? how are the rooms?

Answer
This is a wonderful vacation spot!!
Perfect location, helpful staff, across the street from the beach, beach goodies and a wagon available from the activity center, activities for adults and children!!
We had a one bedroom with a full kitchen and a fabulous view.
The location is also marvelous--walking distance to get to the Coaster to get to San Diego, minutes away to get to all kinds of shopping (Costco, outlet mall, restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, etc...), and freeway close to many attractions--perfect!
The lobby area is also very welcoming with coffee, tea, and fruit for the guests.

BEAUTIFUL VIEW right off Carlsbad Blvd!

I celebrated an early Father's Day / Birthday here last weekend and fell in love with Carlsbad. We had a 1 bedroom, 1 bath condo. it comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, dish washer, cookware, silverware and glassware), and a patio facing the ocean. The VIEW from our room was AMAZING! the ocean was mysterious and deep blue, the sun was shiny and warm, the sea breeze was warm and welcoming - everything was so perfect!

The decor of the condo is a little out of date (e.g. pastel wall border stickers & mint color carpet). The bath tub is a little small. Wish there is more than 1 pool table because it is always taken. But these are minor problems and can be fixed easily.

The rate for a 1br / 1ba condo ranges from $239 ~ $359 per night.

I will definitely come back again for special occasions.
I stayed here for a nice get away while staying local. I had a two bedroom with a full kitchen and a little patio that faced the ocean. This is a real nice place. It has a club house, a gym, two pools (one for adults only) and a fun play area for kids that includes a pirate ship and a little water theme area.

It's located right across the 101 from the ocean, so beautiful views! There is no restaurant but since you have a kitchen you can drive across the I-5 to the Costco or down the road to the Ralph's. They also have a basket ball court, tennis courts, pool and ping pong table on the bottom floor.

The only reason this place didn't get a 5 star rating is because my unit was on the back end of the resort which is facing the Coaster train track (a little noisy) and we were situated right next to the club house which is used for weddings on the weekend. And yes, you guessed right, there was a wedding on the Sunday we checked in. It was a little loud.

I also hear that if you are a owner at this timeshare, you can rent the clubhouse for around $100 or $200! That is a steal! The Clubhouse faces the Ocean and the pool area. Nice location for a casual wedding.

So check on their nightly rates if you are coming to the area because this is a pretty good location. I called the front desk to get an idea of rates and I was told the nightly rate can range from $239 a night during spring and upwards of $300 during peak season. But considering this is for a 2bd/2bath, full kitchen, ocean view, that is pretty good. Across from the ocean, minutes from the freeway, one exit from the Carlsbad Outlet Mall and down the 101 from the quaint little town of Carlsbad.
I stayed here in July of 2009 with my two little girls, ages 3 and 6. We had a one bedroom condo, so they slept on the sleeper sofa and I got my own bed. While not luxurious, the accommodations were nice. Perfect for the beach. We had a great view of the ocean from our balcony and a fireplace in the living room. Every morning we would go down to the activity center and pick up a radio flyer wagon, fill it with towels, buckets, and shovels and head off to the beach. My six year old would pull my 3 year old in the wagon across the highway, which sounds scary, but there is a light so it's quite safe. The hotel had events like making snores and a poolside BBQ with live music, at little or no cost. They also offered inexpensive crafts for the kids ($1-$3), and my kids had a great time doing those. I would have come here again this year, but was unable to trade my timeshare, and this year we're at the Grand Pacific Palisades Resort, which is okay, but I prefer the Seapointe.

Answer
light blue walls with bunk beds for the girls and a small bed for the boy. i would get the girls girly bedding that has light blue in it and the boy nice blue bedding. i would incorporate the pirate theme by getting pirate pillows and stuffed animals. this way the room is not too girly or too boyish.

Your review on Carlsbad Seapointe Resort in California?

Birthday Party?

elfin418gi

He's turning 7.
What do little kids do at birthday parties, besides eat cake and ice cream? Should I do party bags? Streamers?

thanks

Answer
I love kids' bday parties, and I am known around our small town for my themed parties. I have won twice on www.birthdaypartyideas.com (pirates of the caribbean 7 yr old June 2004 I think? & spongebob 6 yr old 2005). However, I think I am not the norm, as many moms don't have the time or creative energy to do all that work. That website is a great idea for decorating, games, food, etc.

My point is, moms have said to me, "oh, my parties are so boring compared to yours". Not so according to my kids. Kids love parties period. My kids have never said my parties were better than "so and so's". But kids do need to keep busy. You don't have to do the themed thing, but kids do get a kick out of it. But my basic suggestions are (from experience):

1. Keep it 2 hours - 2 1/2 max.

2. Forget feeding them a meal. I find the best time is 1 to 3, or 2 to 4. I tried the lunch thing, and 90% of them did not eat as they were too excited. I threw the meals away.

3. DO have munchies tho' and juice boxes.

4. Plan for around 4 games, and depending on the child, a craft. I usually did craft from 1 to 1:30 -- allowing latercomers to arrive and do their craft; games from 1:30 to 2:15; cake & singing and gift opening and free-play from 2:15 to 3. It usually worked out fine.

5. If you're having it at your home, keep the party in one room. Bedrooms were off limits. I've heard of parties where a child's favourite toy is broken 'cuz of the barrage of kids in their room. I tell those that want to crash my son's room, "you can come another day for a play day". If it's an outdoor party, the kids stay outdoors unless they need to use the washroom.

6. I use the rule with my kids, "you can invite the same # of kids as the age you're turning", so if your child is turning 7, he/she can invite 7 friends.

7. Goody bags are a must -- and kids really look forward to them, so if you have extra money to spend, do it here. Dollar stores are great for this.

8. ALWAYS call moms/dads who do not RSVP your invite. Don't assume their child's coming if you haven't heard anything. I had a mom last year who didn't call me, because the invitation did not make it to her hands. Somewhere between school and home, her son lost it. So it's always good to follow up. Oh, and I typically send invites out 2 weeks before the party.

9. I like playing music at the party -- just to break the silence! My music was theme-related, so for Spongebob, I found Spongebob music off the web, etc.

Don't get stressed over it; plan early; and have fun!!

Ideas for redecorating my childrens' bedrooms and my baby's nursery?

Q. Ok, I live in a five bedroom house. One bedroom is used for my husband's study and a spareroom for visitors. My twin 6 year old girls have their own rooms, and my three year old son has his own room. My three week old baby is sleeping in mine and my husband's room.

We want to move our newborn into her own room, so we're moving the twins in together into the biggest room on the middle floor (we are on the third floor). Since this is currently my son's room, we need to redecorate it. We also need to redecorate one room for my newborn girl (it hasn't been decorated for six years) and a room for my three year old son.

I need ideas! We need one room for a baby girl, one room for a boy to last roughly from age 3 - 10. And a room to last for two girls roughly from age 6 - 12.

I was thinking for my son to have a pirate theme? Two white walls, one blue wall and one blue and white striped wall. All the floors are wooden so we could put a red rug in, then put signs like 'walk the plank' up around the room and I even found a pirate duvet cover to buy here:
http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/PhotoGallery.aspx?Type=SKU&ID=230218213&ThumbID=3

I need ideas for girls' rooms. I DONT want typical a pretty pink, princess room for my six year olds. I don't mind doing that for the baby nursery though.
Sorry - what is a comforter?
I am from England!

Answer
Well, I just redecorated my son's room from a nursery to a big boy room. I did one wall in black chalkboard paint and the other walls are an olive green. I try to avoid themes since my kids are always into something new. Right now I put some army truck stuff around because he likes that kind of thing now but it is all stuff that is removable without a total redo. For my daughter's nursery I did sage green walls as opposed to pink with chocolate brown bedding that also has green and pink in it. Again, there is no real theme to it. I am not big on "grow-with-me" rooms either as I tend to paint the rooms on every whim just to see what a new color looks like. I really like the chalk board paint, even though it is black. It would go with anything and kids love it! I also love green in little girls rooms. I would, however, let the six year olds have some say in it, maybe use their favorite color or a compromise of colors they like and what you like.
