my room is ?????
Q. very kiddyish. how can i make it more for a teenager?
Answer
Hi!
I love this question!
The theme for a transition from a kid to a teen is the development of an independent identity. This can be all kinds of fun to express! Several wall paint/paper and floor covering stores offer virtual bedroom scenes where you can change the colors of the walls , floors, and sometimes even the surfaces and decor. Find the color and texture combinations that most please you before you make the commitment to paint or decorate. You might be surprised at which colors go best with your favorite colors. As a general rule, use the lightest colors for your walls, a medium and neutral color for your floor, and use your favorite color in moderation, so that items in your favorite color are the ones that immediately catch someone's eye. If your favorite colors are dark or very vivid, then make the rest of your room in neutral, light, tones to make your favorite colors pop out.
Teens tend to want to "speak out", so put up a pair of really large cork and dry erase boards. The cork board is where you can post most of your long-term notes, eye candy, ideas, stuff in progress, cards, key chains, etc. It's where you can post your homework or other important papers overnight so you don't misplace them. The dry erase board is a "thoughts for the day" bulletin board. Write how you feel, that neat little phrase or come back you know you'll forget if you don't write it down, a quick place to temporarily write down phone numbers so you or your family can return important calls, and to remind you of stuff for the next day.
Get away from the patterned prints and go for a whole bedroom package (Bedspread, sheets, pillows, shams, bed skirt, and curtains ) in solids or stripes in your favorite colors. If you followed the other rule of only using your favorite colors sparingly around the room, this will be a perfect way to balance everything out.
Being a teen means you've taken on more responsibilities, and this can be reflected in your room. Feel free to set up decor that reflects your hobbies and goals. Did you win awards for anything? Do you have a specific career pursuit? Do you like horses? Think of statues, framed documents, and other three-dimensional stuff. Finally, think of the practical. You should have a low bookshelf and a comfortable work desk for your school books and homework respectively. Make sure your room is well lighted so you don't feel tired sooner than you need to, and get one of those alarm clocks that allows you to set a different alarm time for each day of the week. If I've learned anything, teens have their own agendas and schedules, another galaxy away from my own.
Hope you have a lot of fun and fulfillment from the room makeover!
