My daughter is Redoing her bedroom?
Sienna Gra
My daughter Alyssa wants to redo her bedroom for the summer time. She wants light purple walls, a light purple and white flowered area rug, a light purple bedspread with white and pink, and cute accessories. My daughter is 12 years old, she wants all this for her 13th birthday present. May I add, her flooring is lightish brown, and her bed frame, desk, dresser and furniture are white. I need websites, pictures, any links, or advice about where to get all this (for cheap) or pictures. Thanks so much,
Sienna Grace

Your daughter sounds like she's gotten the decoratin' bug - I remember being in this stage REALLY well as a preteenage girl, even though it was a LOTTA years ago! Nothing I wanted so much as a particular black & white mod style bedspread...which I eventually got and used for several years. Because I thought I was so fashion forward, I never got tired of that fabric. I've since helped 3 preteens (young friends not daughters) with their own first-time room decorating. It's really fun and a great way to teach them how to hammer a nail, maybe use an electric drill, use a paintbrush, what a level is, how to organize & use their space efficiently (like the value of storing things neatly so you can find what you need), what it takes to hang a curtain rod, etc. Good life skills that a lot of kids esp. girls are missing. Also, there's a lot of value in her seeing a female handyperson at this point!
Here's my only partly facetious advice ---In your own best interest, I'd go to TARGET. Go by yourself (w/o the B-Day girl) to first SCOPE OUT their teenage selection - they work on maintaining the latest colors, prints & styles just for kids like your girl. They usually have matching rugs, sheets, chairs, lamps, etc. Also the prices are very reasonable. IF they have something that doesn't make YOU nauseous in the right colors, take her to Target and let her "pick it out" - for godssake DON'T buy anything without her approval, it will just be a trip to return & exchange.
Alternately, you can stitch cute sheets or any wide fabric from the fabric store into a comforter cover/envelope with ties or velcro at one end. Company Store catalog has a sale right now, and have a good selection of cute bedspreads, duvet covers, sheets & pillowcase, etc. that might work for your bedding. For the floor, you might stencil an inexpensive neutral bamboo rug (Internet discount like Overstock.com or Decorator's Collection catalog or Grocery Outlet - $19 for a 5X8 recently!) in the right pattern & colors as a fun project together. Note: seal with polyurethane over the paint. -tAnother fun way to do a flat rug would be to spatter paint with her favorite shades of pink, white, lavender & purple, maybe with a few splashes of lime green. I did the spatter painting with my 12 y.o. niece and her best friend several years ago - we took a bamboo window blind, laid it flat and had a great time using neon colored acrylic craft paint (79 cents-$1 a small bottle at Michael's or other crafters store). We let it dry for a few days before hanging. The project was "mistake-proof" and the window covering turned out great. Another idea: you may want to craft a large framed bulletin board with matching fabric - one fabric decoupaged on the frame, another complementary fabric covering the cork board. She'll always have stuff to display on it & it will save the walls. You can get these at thrift stores, or just buy a frame somewhere & use two layers of foamcore board from the craft store for the pushpin board. Grocery Outlet, Big Lots & other deep discount stores are cheap & quick & have great large picture frames ( (sometimes even an ok picture already in the frame) that can be spraypainted to match. You could collage over the picture that came in the frame, using white acrylic as a primer coat if needed.
I guess the whole point of this exreme bedroom makeover is that she's beginning to exercise her independence and this is the outermost manifestation of that big change. She's looking to have her own place carved out in the house & will probably be surprisingly firm about how that should happen. Plus, she's probably got friends who are also working on their bedrooms, and she needs her place dressed to impress! Thanks for the trip down memory lane this evening...Enjoy this time, it goes FAST!
