Living in the CITY but want a SEA CHANGE (Melbourne).... HELP?

Merry

I grew up in the suburbs (the size of our backyard was bigger than our current house!) ...

I also spent ALL holidays at my grandparents farm riding horses and playing at the beach ... I was very lucky in that I had the best of both worlds!

My husband grew up inner city Melbourne (within 15 mins of CBD) ... and that is where we now live ... 4 people in a 2 bedroom house with a courtyard garden that would be the size of an average bedroom!

Whilst there are MANY things I love about being in the city I am finding myself longing+++ to get away ... the ONLY time over the last 18 months that I truly feel happy, relaxed and sleep well/ feel recharged is when I visit family who have a house near the beach ...

The kids love it also - the difference in them is huge... they talk about it all the time & have commented on how happy I am there ... my youngest has been asking me lately questions like "what did you like doing when you were little" ... which only makes me long for this even more.

If it was up to me I would move tomorrow (somewhere between Frankston South- Mt Eliza and Blairgowrie, Sorrento - close enough to the city for a day trip! LOL) ....

BUT ...my hubby is a city slicker .. (he claims he needs to be in the city for work but his job is such that he could work anywhere!) ...like all marriages we have our ups and downs but for the last 2 years the downs seem more regular than the ups ....

Is it possible to feel like living in the city is draining you of energy?

Is a sea change something you could do part-time (ie rent and spend weekends/school holidays there & weekdays in the city!) ... not sure if this would be affordable $$$
... think that idea is just a dream :( :( :(

Could I suggest a 12 month sea change or would changing kids schools etc mean once you move/make friends etc that moving back would be too hard???

HELP ... any thoughts and ideas appreciated :)

I am originally from Sydney and grew up near the bush and beach. I feel very landlocked here in Melbourne, but have a large garden and quick access to the west coast and a bush block in a seaside town. I don't think it would be practical to split your life with a part time sea change. You'd (or hubby) would have to commute in traffic, would always be at the other place when something was going on in town, kids would be unsettled. Have you considered living on the bay somewhere? You might laugh at the suggestion, but Altona has a beach (of sorts!), lovely retro 60s houses, huge house blocks, schools, in easy reach of the city....

What Suburb?

My family and I want to move to Melbourne and we would like some info on what the best suburbs are?
We don't want to be right in the busy city, but we would like to be within 20 minutes of it. We would like to be within 20 minutes of the beach. We want to be really close to parks with bike trails, like the one that runs along the Yarra River.
I was thinking somewhere like Kew but I really have no idea what each of the suburbs are like. Any information would be great. Thanks.

Hi and great decision to move to the best city in the world ( I have lived in a few)

To help with your question, we sort of need a budget per week for housing, what sort of house, how many kids, ages etc??

Try www.realestate.com.au for rental properties, and to find them, look the suburbs up on www.whereis.com.au

To live in a suburb like Kew, you will be looking at around $300-$600 per week for a 3 - 4 bedroom house.
