decorating kids bedroom & bathroom?

Melissa F

My boyfriend and I don't have his kids stay with us very often so when they do all 4 of them stay in the same bedroom. We haev two sets of bunk beds. The room isn't that big but I would like to set it up so that it is more appealing & more useful to the kids. (2 boys and 2 girls ages 5-10). The room is white.
Bathroom attached is yellow and I have started a fish theme.
Anyone got any advice as to how to make this work for the kids?

Answer
Don't go crazy! The day will come when they are not little anymore, and you don't want major remodeling. In the bathroom, get a shower curtain with fish on it, or a beach scene. You could find a toilet seat with a similar theme. Also a little waste basket, even a clothes hamper to match. These would not cost a fortune, and would be easy to replace as people age. If you have a window, you could get some fish or ocean curtains too. Maybe even a few no slip stick ons of fish in the tub, that could eventually be removed. If you got everything, I think you would still be under $200. 00. Try a place like Bed, bath, and beyond. They have a lot of this stuff, plus they always have discount coupons floating around. You could paint the bedroom an aqua color. Again you could get some fish or beach sheets, and curtains. Again you are not talking about a fortune. Maybe you could find a nice poster or print for the wall. Good Luck!

What do you prefer in the bedroom sheer or thicker curtains?

hmm

I can't decide. I've been going back and forth all day, here's why. We have a streetlight somewhere near our house that makes it just a bit lighter than I'd like at night, but the sheer are nice too, and possibly better for summer? Do you think heavy curtains in a bedroom are weird? Ugh.
Also the thicker ones I like drape a bit on the ground, which I think looks romantic. :-)
Yea my goal is to get rid of my blinds, I hate them. I guess I will go with the thicker, good point on the peeping toms! LOL Although my grandma always say it's a free show if anyone feels so inclined! She's a trip.

Answer
We've gone with double-rod curtains in all our bedrooms. We put sheers or linen curtains (something that lets in a lot of light) on the rod closest to the window. Then full-length, dark colored curtains on the second rod. Get something that, texturally, complements the feel of the room. So with our kids' room, we went with denim for example. Then you can tie back the dark curtains during the day and leave the sheers, and then close them at night to block the light. Best of both worlds.

Peace to you.
