How should I decorate my kids room a boy and girl 9 and 11?
mendy
they both share a room its the master bedroom ...what colors, patterens, divide it into a girl and boys room
Answer
Personally, I think that 9 to 11 is a huge jump, maturity wise, especially with girls. She's probably starting to think about boys and friends and clothes, etc, and the boy is still a "little kid". It's important that you divide the space A: she's on the verge of becoming a teen and needs her own space to have privacy and escape and RELAX (i'm sure they love each other a lot but also get on each other's nerves) & B: once girls and boys start to mature it's better if they have separate bedrooms. You could definately divide the room up in a cool way. You could go to pottery barn for example, or somewhere similar, and buy some sheers with the cable system: (maybe in white or something neutral)

or you could buy some room dividers (like the folding screens)
a "central space" is also an option. (a lounging, hanging out neutral space) Here you could have a pink floor chair and a blue, you could buy a different, more gender neutral rug, buy some girlier lamps for her, some wall decals for him, just mixing and matching. http://www.pbteen.com/gift/thm/thmlng/thmlngffb/
Or you could make their study space on the dividing line. And make it reflect both your little girl and little boy.http://www.pbteen.com/gift/thm/thmstu/thmstusbs/ (of course these are just starting points, you can always change things up)
If you cleanly divided the room, in the center, where the dividing (invisible of course) line is, you could put a couch and a rug and a tv, or their desks and a rug, or a long dresser that has her drawers on one side, his on the other, etc. you get the idea.
Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen are both great magazines that have wonderful ways of decorating rooms. They are also a great way to look for inspiration or cool ways of doing rooms. Take a look at their websites, and call for a catalog to brouse through for ideas. :) www.potterybarnkids.com & www.pbteen.com. Talk to your kids about how they might want their space to look. They each have the'r own preferences, hobbies- maybe she like dancing and he likes the ocean, etc etc. They probably both have great ideas... If you do decide that you just DON'T want divided rooms, you want them to share, take a look at this:

You could always choose basic furnature, and have each pick out their own bedspreads, rugs, (little things)
Whatever

What's the best way to organize your room? Mine is completely and utterly messy.?

The whole room can be terribly cluttered, but the danger zone is my closet. There are bags, shoes, books, and junk I have no idea of where to put or what to do with in there!
Answer
Sit down at your messy desk and decide what it is you want to do in your room. Do you want to exercise? Listen to music? Watch TV? Read? Do homework? Dress quickly? Then divide your room up into areas. By the closet can be your dressing area, a mirror on the closet door or back of the door into your room can take care of that last minute look over to make sure you are ready for your day. Need a place for homework? Then you need a desk, an area to store papers, to arrange a schedule, a place to sit, maybe a lamp and a place to plug into the internet and or electric. Once you have the activities you want to do in your room, tackle each space, one at a time. For example, say you want to be able to get up, get dressed and out the door looking fabulous in 15 minutes, without having to look for that cute little pink purse and so on. First you need to empty the closet and get rid of stuff you either hate, no longer wear, doesn't fit, is stained and so on. With what you have left, you need to organize it in a way that makes it easy to locate what you have. I like to put my purses, hats and beach bags on the top shelf, so I can easily see them and grab and go. Then I have shirts together, pants together, and dresses together and then special clothes all the way to the back, since I don't need them nearly as much. I organize them by color, so white shirts together, green shirts together and so on. That way I can grab a green shirt and a pair of khaki pants and slip on a pair of tan crocs and I am onto the jewelry armoire with a mirror on the front to pick out a pair of earrings and a necklace, a quick look see and grab my purse and phone and I am out the door. When I come in, I have mail, my purse and phone. I usually have the phone in my hand on my way in, so I simply plug it in to be recharged, drop my purse at my desk, with the mail. Now, if I need to write a check to pay a new bill that came in with the mail, I sit right down and do it. No more late bills. In my bedroom, I like to watch tv and sleep. I have a comfy little chair on wheels next to the bed and I keep my remotes right on top end of my bed. So when I come in and drop my phone, purse and mail, I can flop into the chair and grab the remote and point and click. At one time, I have tons of stuff that really didn't belong in my room, laundry baskets of kids clothes and mine, towels, jewelry in little bowls all over the place, my makeup here and there and the bed rarely got made because I was so tired of dealing with all this other stuff. So I sat down and decided what I REALLY wanted to do in there. I took one corner at a time, in 10-20 minutes blocks of time. I first took a box and just went through my room and put EVERYTHING I either hated, didn't want or simply didn't need or know what to do with. Some I donated, some I just simply threw out and some I took to local charities. Once I had done this a few days, I would tackle a corner for 10-20 minutes (I even would set a timer and do it!). I would clean out a drawer, clear the top of my very messy dresser, find all the bowls of jewelry and pick through what I actually wore, used and liked, and then got this lovely jewelry armoire that has a lock and a large mirror on it. I set it next to my closet, and gradually filled it up with stuff I had. I went through my clothes, picked out the stained, ripped, and ill fitting crud that clogged my closet, I set up zones in a way that worked for me. I am a visual person, I like things, but too many things I get overwhelmed with! So sometimes, I can see when I have too many purses, and its time to weed the herd. Once I did this, it just got less messy and easier to deal with and I just took it in stages. Keep in mind, I was going from horrible pack rat to clean, crisp and organized. Give your self time to think it through and then follow your plan, which you have written out, and maybe even drawn out and you can change it as you go if you see something isn't working. Hope this helps you! Good luck!
