How do I get rid of the smell?
Q. I live in a dorm, its the one bedroom efficiency,
http://www.gvsu.edu/housing/?id=06B44C6C-92EA-62F1-4822C9AC3EAB9502
and I just burned some pasta to the point that the smoke alarm went off. My entire room was saturated with smoke.
Are my clothes damaged or can I wash them to get rid of the smell?
How can I get the rest of my apartment to not smell like smoke?

A. There are a number of ways to clean out the smell, start with the easy ones first and work your way through until the smell is gone. First, open any windows you can and air out the place. I know its winter, but do what you can! Take any drapes, throw rugs and comforters and wash them, adding baking soda to the wash cycle and wash as usual. Make sure the offending burnt pasta is removed from the dorm room and put outside in the trash, including any remnants from the pan if it can be saved. Wash down any surfaces that are washable, like the stove top, counter tops, walls and door frames with a good degreaser, followed by a damp rinse of a cloth with baking soda. Fill small lids, plastic/ceramic bowls with white vinegar and place in areas all around the rooms, including the bathroom, the bedroom and kitchen. Let stand. You can also use a diluted solution of vinegar to rinse/wipe all surfaces that are washable and let dry. If there are any fans in the stove, wash the filters. If any one the ceiling, clean with the above and allow to dry. Any clothing or cloth that is retaining the smell, can be hung outside to air out, or washed in a regular detergent with some baking soda and followed with a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. Beds, mattresses, couches, chairs and the like can be Febreezed and allowed to air dry. This should cure the problem, unless you have had a actual fire, in which case smoke damage can be MUCH HARDER to undo. All surfaces should either be dusted or wiped down. If wood, use a good lemon oil to remove any dust and stink left behind. Also, lemon juice diluted can be used on plastic, countertops that are laminates to rid smells. Basically, its a pain, but those are the easy cheap solutions. But they will require some elbow grease. Try not to close up any area that still has stink left in it, do as much airing out as is possible and then follow with the white vinegar treatment. Hope this helps you out! We used these treatments when an egg was zapped by one of the kids in the microwave for like 20 minutes, the smell was HORRIBLE! It did do the trick though. Basically, we had to hit everything that the smell had touched. It was more annoyance than expense, and the smell was really really horrific. Good luck!
Needs ideas for an awesome fairy themed bedroom for my daughters?
Q. They are 8, 6 and 2. We decided to re-do their room it's currently just pink and the 6 & 8 year old have matching furniture and the 2 year old has a toddler bed.
We can buy new furniture for them and paint do anything basically but we need some ideas? :)

A. How about wall stickers.. Saves you painting again also the kids can have personalised fairies over each of there beds and maybe a little rug each at the foot of there bed.. It's a cheaper option and u do get what u pay or with wall stickers as the cheap ones tend to peel easy :-)
Going to college with the right dorm materials?
Q. I'm not going to college for a couple years but I want to know what kind of things people usually bring when they start their first year.
I want to be really ready when the time comes.
It may be a little rushy to some people, but my mom is really picky.
She'll say a lot of things are unnecessary, so the more time I have to raise money to buy things myself, the better.

A. You will typically have to share a room the first year. I shared a room throughout my 4 years of college. It's not that bad, as you get to make decent friends this way and you learn how to cope with other people.
Having said the above, the average dorm room is probably as big as an average master bedroom in most homes. So, you only get to decorate about 50% of that...and the college dorms typically come with some standard furnishings, such as a bed, study desk, dresser and closet space.
I would recommend the following items:
pens
pencils
spiral notebooks (one for each subject)
hilighter markers (several colors)
handheld calculators (plural)
flashlights (plural)
desk lamp
alarm clock
clock radio (set two alarms on exam days)
toiletries
mattress cover (platic thing)
mattress pad
single bed clothes (sheets, blankets)
bed comforter for cold nights
small space heater
fan
packpack
briefcase
area rug
small bedside table
table lamp
some cool posters (colleges frown on you nailing pics to the wall, so posters can add a personal touch to your room and be applied with double-sided adhesive tape)
dictionary (small)
thesaurus
scissors
ruler
different tapes and adhesives
white glue
computer
CD/tape player
refrigerator
hotpot (for making soup, coffee or tea)
a few dishes and ample cheap flatwear
coffee cups
Again, you will be sharing a room, so don't arrive on campus with too many things your first semester. You usually won't need 2 of everything. So, you can decide with your roommate who will bring what for the second semester (things like a TV, VCR, DVD player).
Remember, you're there to study and get an education. Not feature your dorm room in Martha Stewart's Living magazine. Too much "stuff" can be a giant distraction (nevermind studying for next weeks final exams, let's all watch some DVDs!)
Another thing. It wouldn't hurt to buy some "nice clothes" to sort of stand-out from the other kids. If you want to look like a college clone, that's fine. But, things like an overcoat, some dress clothes and shoes, will make you look more professional. Colleges often have activities like student concerts and recitals, and it's expected that the young college students will attend them looking like young professional adults. And, you need not spend a fortune on such clothes. I totally missed the boat in my youth...I never discovered "thrift stores" until I was out in the working world. I wish I had known about them during my college daze. I would have been the coolest kid on kampus! with some of the neat stuff I've found at thrift stores (clothing and furnishings).

Can you help with Unisex bedroom ideas?
Q. My children will be sharing a bedroom. My son is 6, and my daughter will be 3 this month. Does anyone have any design ideas that will make them both feel at home? I'm a single mom, so budget is a big factor to consider. Thanks for your help!
A. Rubber duckies are always cute. My sister's kids' bathroom had a whole makeover just by adding a new shower curtain, toothbrush holder, rug, and framed photo all of rubber duckies. I think she got the stuff at WalMart. I love it for a kids' bathroom.
EDIT: I'm so sorry I misread that and thought it said bathroom.
A cute unisex idea for a bedroom is a jungle theme or even just using coordinating colors on the bedding. A red, white, and blue patriotic theme would be really cute, and easy too. One could have a navy blue comforter and the other could have a red comforter with white sheets. Then you can find all kinds of stars and stripes stuff cheap at thrift stores and again, at WalMart/Kmart/TJ Maxx - whatever you have near you. Good luck!
