At the max, how many people can live comfortably in a 4000 sq feet house?

Q. We are going to build a house and it is 4000 sq feet. There are already 6 people now- my husband's two grandmothers, parents-in-law, my husband and I. He wants to have only 4 bedrooms in the house, and I want 5, because in future, there has to be a provision for the kids and a guest bedroom also. What do you all think?

A. So that's one for you and your husband, one for your husband's parents, and one for his grandmothers. Wow, you're really going all out with the whole close-knit family thing. J/k. That's quite full house.

Yeah, you're going to have to have at least 5 minimum if you want visitors. I'd want at least 2 other rooms that could be made into a bedroom if needed.

There's your compromise right there.

The extra rooms don't have to be a bedroom, they can be anything except storage closets and when/if the time comes that they need to be made into a bedroom, they'll be there. But the rooms should exist for the potential need later on. Talk to your husband. Since you're making the house yourselves, perhaps he can extend the area a bit more, or you can discuss the potential of adding a second floor if the area is already been maxed out according to property laws and such.

At any rate, everyone needs their alone time, so there should be space enough to make that feasible. A couple hobby rooms that can be used as personal work shops would be nice, which I'm sure your husband must be thinking about that as knowing construction, he probably likes to work on things, so he's probably going to have an area for himself to work on things. Well, an extra room or 3 could be used for a variety of things that can also be quickly changed later into a bedroom for the odd case of company and/or friends, and/or even a renter if you so desire the extra income every month.

Some of those uses for extra rooms in the mean time while they're not needed as bedrooms could be a play area for the kids where they keep their toys and games, a quiet room to devote one's self to praying and reading the Bible, studying about God, a personal library with all the books your family has accumulated over the years that are sitting in boxes because you don't want to throw them away, and you don't know what else to do with them because they take up too much space, hobby rooms for you, your kids, your husband, your parents, his grandmothers, to use so that they don't have to feel like they're doing nothing in the house all day, an exercise room with weights and aerobic things, a company room for when your kids have sleep-overs and you don't want to hear them or when you have friends over for tea or a Bible study, although, the living room is usually reserved for that, having a separate room for that will help you to avoid disturbing the peace of the elderly who often enjoy periods of peaceful silence.

If someone is into film photography, you could use the room as a darkroom to develop pictures, although, if you're going to do that, you should probably discuss that before building the room as you will likely need running water, a drain, and well-placed switches for the different lights, and a way of cutting absolutely all light either from the entire room or from a section of it, such as a closet so that you can transfer the negative strip from the container to the bathing receptacle so that you can develop it.

Well, good luck. I totally agree with you, and it would be nice aesthetically, but if your husband's a practical-type, he may be more receptive to the idea of an extra room or two that can be used for other things, and later converted into a bedroom if the need arises. Just don't let it happen that they become storage closets because if that happens you'll never be able to let company use it as a bedroom.

How to re-introduce our dogs and cats after a bad beginning?
Q. One of our cats was chased by our two adopted dogs at the initial meeting. Now he hides in my closet and won't come anywhere near them. Nothing we have tried helps him to become less afraid and willing to give them another chance. They do not chase our other two cats, but this one shows fear and I think they sense it. He lives in my bedroom and the dogs aren't allowed in there. I want to have them all get along and I feel awful for the poor guy! I can't afford a 'cat whisperer'. Please offer suggestions!

A. I had the same experience! Three cats had to be introduced to a big old mutt! We saved him, just in the nick of time, but one of my cats (Tiger) took exception with a dog living with us. (A few months later we had two dogs.)

I was afraid. She lost weight and we hardly saw her for months. No sooner was I getting very afraid, she started to show herself.

I told the dogs they were fabulous, but cats have claws! Beware!!!

She found her way! After a few months she was out and about. Now, she will stand on the steps as the dogs run down without flinching! She knows who she is. She knows now the dogs will not hurt her. I would never allow that!

Just like people we have to find our way. Our home was open to extra love from pets that needed us. Tiger took a few moments to consider this and then realized I would never allow anything bad to happen to her. We all co-exist.

If I could I'd send you a photo of me, two kids, two dogs, and three cats all living together happily. It is possible.

Additionally, when I introduced "The Mutt, Browser," to our new puppy, COCO, he attacked! I saved her by holding her over my head. I put him in a crate and let her out. Then I turned it around. She was in and he was out. After less than a week they were so anxious to be together they became fast friends.

This is another idea that might work.

Thanks for asking. Good Luck!!!

What is the best situation for my children sharing a room?
Q. I am due with our 3rd child in Feb. I have a 4 year old boy and an 18 month old daughter (we do not yet know the sex of the new baby). We only have 3 bedrooms, so someone has to share. Here is the scoop. My 4 year old is a sound sleeper, my 18 month old is a very light sleeper. My choice would be to have the baby share the romm with the 18 month old, as to not disrupt the feelings of the 4 year old, since he will be emotionally dealing with a new baby anyways, and we don't want him to feel like he is being uprooted. I guess the other choice is for the two older two to share as well. My husband doesn't want us to share our room either since we had both our kids sleeping through the night at 7 weeks in their own cribs, he feel like we should stick with the way we have done it (child in their room in their crib). Help with any ideas is appreciated:) thanks!!!

A. Is there any other room that could be utilized for a bedroom, such as basement, family room, extra large walk-in closet for a baby room, dining room? The two younger rooms would create a problem...no sleep for the parents...since the 18 month old is a light sleeper. Both of them will be up in the middle of the night crying at the same time. It would be the best to make the move for the little ones now so it will be easier when the new baby comes in, they will be adjusted to their sleeping quarters. This will eliminate two new adjustments at the same time, new baby and new sleeping arrangements! Children thrive under routine. Just make sure the older one feels he has his OWN personal space, even if you have to have his room divided w/a curtain, or masking tape. This will make him think that he hasn't lost all his privacy. Try to think outside the box, I'm sure that you'll find a terrific solution. Its great that you are planning ahead, this is definitely an advantage! Best wishes!

Any ideas for 2 girls and boy sharing 1 bedroom?
Q. We have a 4 year old girl, 2 year old boy and 11 month old girl. Pictures would be great to get some ideas!

A. Crib for the 11 month old, bunk beds for the 4 and 2 year old. 2 year old gets the bottom bed. Paint the room a gender neutral color, like yellow or a creme color. One side is for the girls to keep their things and the other is for the boy. Get separate trunks for their toys and let them help decorate too. Separate closets if available, if not, divide it equally, one side for each. Make sure there are no heavy items that can fall on the children. Bolt them down if necessary. Install child safety locks on drawers and doors if necessary. Kids are curious and will inevitably get into trouble at some point. Good luck.
